it is a knocking noise we checked the oil level today and it need a quart so we did add it

  • mindys04 Dec 21, 2008

it goes away when in neutralk or drifting but is bad when the gas pedel is pushed

it is extremely possible that your air-filter be clogged and your engine is struggling to get air but is not able to but then again you said in neutral it doesnt make the noise, could be rad fan hitting something really i would check those 2 things and post your findings

Sorry, tough call without hearing it. No friend who can give you a ride to work, or borrow a car? If not, accelerate slowly on take-off, and be careful. Good Luck !!

If your really stuck, I guess you'll have to drive it, but if at all possible to find someone to give you a quick diagnosis on way to work, or at work, I'd certainly try to ask someone who knows a little about cars. In the meantime, go easy, take your time. Sorry I wish I could be of more help than that. I'm leaning toward a flywheel problem or piston knock. Didn't you say it goes away when in gear & driving?

Do you mean the noise appears like a "knocking" sound when you rev the engine in park? Or is it more of a rumbling sound?

Have you checked the oil level lately? Low oil can cause a lot of problems that result in noises. If i could hear it, I'd certainly do what I can to help, but all I can do right now is guess by what info I get.

01 cavalier 2.2 Have had no problems at all. Turned it off and when I went to start it 1/2 hour later it wouldn't even turn over.

Check the connection from the battery cable to the starter. Might need cleaning. Solenoid may not be kicking in. Is the whirr only when the key is in the start position?

My car was off for 14 hours; I was standing beside it in the garage and a loud bang sound came from under the hood. I popped the hood and cannot see anything wrong. Am litle afraid to start it!! What

Is your car well protected with antifreeze? If not, maybe a freeze plug came out. Living in Montana, cars stay outside all winter. I always use a 50-50 solution of antifreeze. Never had coolant freeze up.
Before cranking the car, check that your timing belt did not pop. Don't know how it could, sitting there 14 hours, but turn crank slowly by hand, and check that camshaft is also turning.

2001 cavalier 2.2l automatic transmission,we cannot find the dipstick to check its fluid level where is it supposed to be located?

it would be on the backside of the engine - depending how the car was designed. The other thing is that chevy's are notorious for not having easy access to anything under the hood. keep looking you will find it - use a good wand type light so that you can see in there better.
Best regards
Ck

I have a 94 cavalier the abs light came on and now i have no brakes the pedal goes to the floor and some kind of noise is coming from under the hood

That sounds like you may have broken a brake line except for the noise under the hood. Unless it is brake fluid squirting up, hitting the hood. Check the inside of all four tires and under the hood on the driver's side below the wind shield. My guess is you are going to find a big oily spot where all of your brake fluid has gone.

1997 cavalier turn signals

Your left turn signal relay might be out, if i remember correctly, it's located in the fuse box, and is as easy as changing a fuse. If it isnt in the fuse box under your dash then check under the hood, possibly near the battery.

Making loud banging sound when gas pedel pushed

This sounds like a broken motor or transmission mount.  Try to isolate the location of the banging noise to give you or a mechanic an idea of which mounts to check first.  Some motor and transmission mounts can be tricky, so you may have to remove them to see that they are worn or broken.
