I had same issue with my 98', after replacing plugs, wires, map sensor, searched time and time again for vac leaks, both o2 sensors etc.the negative terminal wire from battery to engine was slightly loose at the engine.I pulled that end off and cleaned and tightened and ran like a champ immediatley! Only reason i found that problem was accidental, when i was shaking some wires around it arched at that spot.

SOURCE: 96 CHEVY CAVALIER. R&R DRIVE AXLE SHAFTS. AUTO TRANS.

If your looking to replace them, wich is what most do today, it is cheaper to purchase a axle with new cv joints than to rebuild them. It is a very simple job in todays cars, remove tires remove lower tie rod , remove nut in center of the rotor and pull wheel assembley to the side hanging from the strut, pull axle out replace the transmission seal, push new axle in. When putting wheel assembley on, use a hydraulic jack on bottom of the rotor to push it to the axle splines and put the new nut on .

Check for vacuum leaks. Spray some carb cleaner or WD40 around the intake manifold, trottle body and any vacuum lines. Check for loose connections on engine wiring harness (Maybe you disconnected a sensor, and forgot to re-attach it?).

SOURCE: How to change spark plugs of Chevy cavalier 2002

for the most part they are in between the fuel injector the best thing for you to do is stop by your local GM dealership in the part department and they be able to print you off the pictures and diagrams you need if all fails stop by your local library and get your hands on a Haynes auto repair manual for your car Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as always wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.

Black smoke>fuel consumption>rough idle

Hi there:
Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running rich." Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor.

How did the fuel get into the cylinder in the first place? Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil as in the white smoke example to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil. Call your mechanic and advise him of what you have found.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Burning smell, check engine light-misfire, rough idle 96 cavalier

Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.

My 96 sunfire 2.2 l auto idels rough and blows out black smoke when i rev up the motor. i also hesitates on the highwy

Black smoke is from too much fuel, or a mis-firing of the spark plug. Pull all plugs to look to see if one is blackened. If so, this is your troubled cylinder. You can test each spark plug wire with a High energy spark plug tester. If that looks OK, then do a compresion test to see if the mechanical part of the engine seems good.
