Question about 1995 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

1 Answer

My 1995 Mercedes Benz E420 has lost power gradually

I own a 1995 E420. The car has progressively lost power over the past year. The trouble began with the vehicle's engine racing at passing speeds > 70mph. Then, it would need 10-15 minutes of warm up before moving after overnight or at least 5 hours sitting. Next, it would stall if any attempt was made to accelerate past 30mph. I recently moved to St.Croix in the US Virgin Islands where there is no dealership or person with a Benz computer to identify the specific problem. My local mechanic tried changing the fuel pumps, but that made the situation worse. Please help.

    Thanks txkjun,

I checked the transmission fluid and the fluid level was adequate. What would make the engine shut off when I attempt to accelerate past 30 mph? The mechanic to whom I took the car thinks there might be some sort of fail-safe that saves the engine from damage. Any other suggestions?

    txkjun,

Yes, the check engine light is on. Thanks for your effort in locating a local shop with a Launch x431.

Have you check the transmission fluid level? It sounds like it is low. You might not have a dipstick in that unit. I'd add at least 2 quarts and test drive it.

Is your MIL light (check engine) on. A drivability problem like this should have set a code. I am trying to find a shop there with a Launch X431. I may have to wait until Monday to talk to Launch support to find you a shop in St Croix.

Model years are overlapping with current years. Its a manufacturing race for new models to be on the lots before the year. I would go off the emission sticker under hood for year of car as engines are set to the emission reductions for the listed year.

RUN THE scanner and computer do not waste the time and your money. The EMC OR BCM is faulty or speed sensor faulty with the scanner determine which is faulty.

Isuzu bighorn year 1995, not changing gear after 1st gear

This is the classic symptom of a vehicle with a failed torque converter lockup solenoid.
The lockup solenoid "locks up" the transmission to the drivetrain but only operates when the transmission progresses from first gear to second gear.

Speed sensor makes check engine light comes on.

Yes sometimes it can depending on how your vehicle computer is set up.However if you have check engine light on you should do just that by the use of OBD 1 scanner tool OBD 2 is 1995 and newer your vehicle is the earlier version.Any any rate guessing why the light is on can be costly with the light remaining on and no progress made if you have no such equipment OBD 1 tool perhaps pass by a garage and have this problem scanned usual cost is $25.00 and up some places might charge more?Merry christmas. Pro & con

Upside Sleek and dignified design inside and out, pleasing blend of ride and handling, powerful V8 engines, sophisticated safety features, all-wheel drive available on both sedans and wagons. Downside More expensive than competitors, confusing control layout, electronically controlled brakes lack progressive feel. What's New for 2007 Most of the changes to the 2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class relate to engine upgrades. Mercedes' AMG division has renamed last year's E55 AMG as the E63 AMG in light of its more powerful 507-hp V8 engine.
