I had this problem for the past few weeks and thought it was a heater core or something. Well, I never checked the antifreeze and a few days ago it refused to start. The coolant was BONE DRY and now I'm hoping I haven't done major engine damage. Get that checked asap. Good luck!

Make sure the raditor is full. Don't just check the overflow tank but pull the cap when the engine is cold and make sure the fluid is to the top. If that is good then check vacuum line that controls the flapper that diverts air from airconditioner to heat. My 1999 Dodge 1500 had this problem and it was a cracked vacuum line.

We had some subzero weather while I was on vacation. My 2004 Jaguar was parked outside for several weeks. We had another very cold, icy day, and heater did not work. Fan works, rear window defroster...

What is happening here is that the faster the heater blows air through the fan, the more it cools the liquid in the heater core, and so heat output is reduced. The root of the problem is either the engine is not warming up enough, or the heater core, and/or heater core lines, are plugged up, not allowing the water to circulate properly in the heater core. Here is what I would try.

1. Top off the radiator and overflow.
2. Is the engine warming up properly? Is your temperature gauge showing normal temperatures? If it is not, then replace the thermostat.
3. If steps 1 and 2 do not solve the problem, get the vehicle in a shop, locate the heater core lines, take them apart and flush out the heater core. Look for blockages in the fittings. Do a flow test on the core. It may be clogged and need to be replaced.

Heater does not blow out hot air, it is mild warm, the control valve is on far right but only blows out mild warm air. 1997 Chevy truck

check a few things 1. check to see if your truck has built pressure in the radiator when hot. if not change the cap.. make sure you have a good thermestat in the truck.. last you can disconect the two heater hoses and see if water flows freely. if all else failes. make sure the water is moving in the radiator by removing the cap and allowing it to warm, when the thermestat opens you should see the water move if not the inpeller in the pump could be broken.. if all else fails change the radiator

Heater takes forever to start blowing hot air

You probably have a bad thermostat - the one that controls water flow to the radiator. It's supposed to stay closed until the engine reaches proper operating temperature. But when they fail, it's usually in the open position so the water circulate to the radiator all the time. The engine takes longer to warm up, and you shiver in the meantime. It does eventually get hot - it just takes a lot longer. I bet if you replace that thermostat you'll be toasty in no time. As for the cigarette lighter, your portable heater may have blown the fuse.
