I just had a tensioner placed on my 1999 escort zx2 today

He first said i needed a belt and the price would be 79.00 plus tax.
it ended up being a tensioner at 109.55 plus 80.00 labor.
why was there such a difference?

There is a difference in the price of parts and a difference in the amount of labor required for both of those different jobs. Remember, work done at most automotive repair facilities are priced by a labor rate book rather than the actual time it takes to do the repair.

These are two links for the parts , labor varies depending on state and shop. No more than an hour labor. Normally I would recommend a tensoner whenI change surpentine belts. Hope this was helpful. Here is link for labor charge.. http://repairpal.com/ Good luck leave me a fix ya if I fixed ya thanks

Need 2001 ford escort zx2 DOHC engine information, belt diagrams

The tensioner is between the a/c compressor and crank pulley, below the power steering pump. Use a 13 mm wrench to 'tighten' the bolt in the center of the pulley and it'll move to release tension off the belt.

There is a screw right in the middle of the tensioner..It may be a Hex, or Allon Key, but double check it, before you stick the wrong tool inside, and strip it...Goodluck

On the right side of the pulleys, there should be 3 top, middle, and bottom. The middle, smaller one, is the tensioner.

Need diagram for replacing scerpentine belt in 99 ford escort zx2

go to gates.com and click the link on the left that says Part Locator & Interchange, put in your car info then look down the page and click the camera next to the serpintine belt. These belts are not usually hard to change, the tensioner pulley should have a 3/8" square drive hole in it to release the tension, I always start at the crankshaft and loop around leaving the tensioner for last, hope this helps, let me know

Escort timing belts - excessive wear

The idlers wear out too. If you or your mechanic haven't replaced the idlers, the belt will creep to one side and shred prematurely.

Another possible cause could be the tensioner is not set correctly. It's easy to misread the instructions and get it wrong.

Serpentine belt replacement

2.0L Engines
See Figures 11, 12 and 13
The accessory drive belt for 2.0L engines has no provision for manual belt adjustment, since these engines use an automatic belt tensioner. Drive belt slack is taken up by the automatic tensioner.
Movement of the automatic tensioner assembly during engine operation is not a sign of a malfunctioning tensioner. This movement is the tensioner self-adjusting and is required to maintain constant belt tension.
The belt tensioner has a belt length indicator. If the indicator marks are not between the MIN and MAX marks, the belt must be replaced.
