Question about 1998 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

Have a mitsubishi Galant 1998 automatic, 2.4L. The problem is a few weeks ago I heard a whirring noise coming from under the hood, did not take it too seriously, because it goes and come. Well two days ago, the car drove fine for almost a 1/2 mile, and then it just powerd down, failing to shift into 3rd and 4th gears. In order for me to drive the car, I had to shift it into 2nd gear.Took the car to a tranny shop, whereby they connect a mobile computer code meter, which they said nothing wrong with my electronics, that the problem is transmission failure, they reccomend a complete rebuild.what to do?

The whirring noise sounds like something broke inside your tranns. so it is likely to require a rebuild.

Was the timing belt replaced recently? If your crank pulley/harmonic balancer is wobbling, it is probably loose. Do not run the engine, if this part falls out, it will cause more damage.

yoy could have a bad t belt tensioner or bad t belt pulley. get this looked into right away. you have what is known as an inteference engine. if you lose that belt for any reason, it WILL drop a valve, and your're looking at a lot of money for an job.

Loud whirring noise at start-up

The first thing to check would be to make sure the power steering reservoir is not running near empty, locate the filler cap for the power steering pump it should be marked and then add the appropriate amount making sure you don't over fill, that may make the sound go away if not we must move on to the next possibility, by the way if the noise gets louder when you turn the steering wheel it is most likely the power steering pump or fluid level is low.

Engine wont start All interior and exterior lights come on clicking noise heard under the hood Radio still works

Check all of your fuses then make sure that you are getting 12 volts from the battery. If starter is making a grinding noise, it sounds as if it is not getting enough voltage. If it is and makes a whirring noise, it may be the starter itself. Hope this helps.

How do you remove front grille on mitsubishi galant 1998

Well, you will have to pop the hood and take out the bolts on top, next you need to remove the headlights as there are a few bolts behind those.  Check underneath the grille for a couple more bolts.  and it should come right out.
