Question about 1990 Toyota Celica

Car doesn't have any power

My 1990 toyota celica gts started to lose power, it would spit and sputter. When I take off its slow and if I go up a hill I lose power and speed. It runs fine once it gets to about 30-40 miles an hour. Going down a hill it runs fine. Back in Sept I had to have the timing belt replaces and since then I have had nothing but trouble. Before the power lose it was running hot, I had to replace a few hoses. Doesn't seem to run hot now but seems to be low on water somehow. The car now wont run no more than about 10-15 miles an hour if that. It takes forever to go in reverse, till yesterday (12-19) there was no problem with reverse. This problem started at the first of the week and had gotten worse (12-14/15)

This happened to me and yes it was caused by a timing belt i replaced it and guess what? My car took forever to pick up speed but once i hit 30mi than it was fine. So i found that one valve was bended so i had to rebuild the heads now its fine one way to find out if you have a faulty valve is by unpluging one of the spark plugs wires you are probably running on 3 cylinders thats why it has no power until it reaches some speed then its fine but when you stop and try to go again it does the same thing i recomed 4 you to go check the heads i bet thats what is wrong with your car. Youll end up paying arround 500 bucks! ! Parts and labor but its a. 1990 celica worth it? Yes its the best car i have ever owned!! And if it happens again i will fix it i love my celica! !

SOURCE: Problem with the 1990 Toyota

sounds like it is out of time for the running part and it could also make it run a little on the warm side

1990 toyota celica gts 2200 motor vibration when idled up

You may want to check your motor mounts. If the mounts are broken or just too old they will cause the engine to have excessive vibration your notice also when shifting to drive or reverse it will feel like the vehicle jumps. replacing the mounts will help if they are damaged or may be that the vehicle needs a tune up.

Whats the max amount of miles you can drive on a 1990 toyota celica gts with the first engine?

If well maintained and with regular service this engine can last up to 150,000 miles. Remember, this means changing all fluids regularly, changing the hoses and belts regularly and just keeping the engine in tip top condition. No racing, no over revving, etc.

1990 Toyota Celica will not start.

Sounds like the connection from the battery to the chassis ground is bad. Try replacing the Negative battery wire and make sure where it attaches to the frame is as rust free as possible

I'm trying to clear codes for a 1990 Celica GTS. Any hints??

You might try removing the battery connectors for five minutes and replacing back.

If the codes do not disappear, please you might have to get a scanner to do that.

Cheers.

I need to replace the water pump and timing belt in a 1990 Celica GTS but I need to transport the car 90 miles before doing it. I don't think the pump is too far gone but I don't want to lose the engine,...

water pumps usually only leak after shut down but no guarantees, you may also want to change oil pump o ring seal. It's right next to water pump, they get old and leak too.Oil pump o-riing and shaft seal very inexpensive from dealer,
