Question about 1986 Ford Bronco

1 Answer

Alternator/battery issues my 86 Bronco will start up just fine, but after driving around for a while, I'll try to start it and it won't turn over. If I leave it sit for about an hour or so, it will fire up again. This doesn't happen every time either. The battery is good and after a jump I will be on my way until the next time. It seems very random and sporatic but I hope someone can help me find a solution.

Sounds like either the starter or starter relay. Can you hear it click? If so it ismosst likelythe starter and not the relay.

SOURCE: 86 Bronco Lost all power (eletrical) and will not start

I own the 87 year model and had a similar experience after being off-road. Found positive cable to be in contact with chassis. try checking to see if this is the case in your situation using an ohm meter with the bat disconnected. should have infinite ohms between pos cable clamp and chassis ground.

Check out you alternator! It needs to be putting out around 14v. also check out your starter relay, Those things tend to go out with no warning at all.

Whenever, you replace a battery, it is a good idea to have the alternator checked to make sure that it is producing enough amperage to run the vehicle and charge the battery.

Suggest you take your car to an auto parts store and ask them to test your alternator under load. That is the most likely problem, your alternator.

Hi there !

I won't say its an alternator problem because the alternator only charges the battery when its on, And it should start with the jump cables even if the battery and the alternator are bad. your Issue is not clear. Does the car start when you jump it ?
