Tune up

You need to study or research info on tune-ups
Basically it is a sales pitch, as only spark plugs are left
& tune-ups stopped 25 years ago from a technical perspective
Your not actually tuning anything
You replacing old spark plugs, gas & air filter etc, that has been
called preventative maintenance for over 20 years
For the last 30 years the vehicles Computer does all the
engine tuning

The RPM's fluctuate after the car warms up. I think I need a tune-up.

The maintenance tune ups, for most of the cars, are scheduled at 30K, 60K , 90K miles. If you are late on the scheduled maintenance tune up, of course your car needs it, but to find the problem you need a "Check and Advice", only at Volvo dealer. It cost $65 to $100, on the top of tune up cost.

I got a 1988 GMC Jimmy it needs a tune up and has

Wow, tough decision,
You need to determine why the over heating, are you losing coolant,if you are it could be anything from a radiator to water pump on the famous 4.3 intake leaking,if your not losing coolant, well it could be thermostat, head gasket, cooling fans .
And you didn't say why the tune up was needed,if its missing or a if the over heating and the tune up problem are related,But a good tune up just in parts will run $125.00
might be time to pack it's bags!

TUNE UP ON MAZDA MVP 2002 HOW OFTEN?

Personally, I'd have it "tuned up" once or twice a year. It also depends on what you would call a "tune up"

Tune up

Well their is the basic tune up consisting of just spark plugs. Then their is the whole tune up package which is plugs, wires, and distributor.

What do you call a tune up?

U are correct, a 'tune up' is not an oil change, although the oil certainly can be changed at the time of a tune up (every 3k miles or twice a year if u don't drive much, and always change the oil filter too). Cars differ, mostly older to newer as to what can and should be done for a tune up. A car from the 1960's would need more parts replaced more often than a new car today (example: electronic ignitions of newer cars eliminate ignition points replacement, and generally, replacement is not as often of other parts: example, spark plugs).
So, a tune up can include spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, and I would include fuel and air filters. There are exceptions to this too, making it more complicated to generalize what to replace, as wires and spark plugs can last 100k miles now, some vehicles don't have the traditional dist. cap and rotor to replace. Check your car owners manual for an idea of what to replace and how often. If u don't have the original owners manual, check the car manufacturers web site for info. Good luck with the tune up!

Tune Up

At 100,000 change the spark plugs, at 30,000 the air filter, at 60,000 the fuel filter.
