Question about 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage

Engine is missing and shaking bad when idleing or driving slow

I drive a Mirage Mitsubishi 2000. When idling the car shakes bad and sometimes it is hard to get it to start without giving it gas. Sometimes it feels as if the car isn't getting any gas when you push the accelerator and when you put it in gear it just dies.

I first checked the spark plugs to find that there was oil on them. I replaced the spark plugs and valve cover gasket kit to ensure there is no more oil in them but the problem is still there. I also replaced the spark plug wires. And I've run fuel injector cleaner through my gas on two fill ups.

Does anyone know what my problem narrows down to? A fuel problem? (Like a fuel filter or fuel pump?) or somthing else such as my timing belt or any other cause?

I replaced the spark plug seals and oil is no longer getting to my spark plugs. That's fine now. My valve cover gasket set was fortunately complete.

I replaced the coil connectors the same time I replaced the other two spark plug wires.

I also replaced the fuel filter today. Saving up for a coil to try out.

The old spark plugs had black spots on some of them. Other than that I'm not sure. The new spark plugs have been gapped to .040 inches.

have you replace the wires ? I think the ones that go under the coils are not included with the other 2 wires .

  • Jeremy Kastrup May 11, 2010

One of your coils may have shorted internally causing your misfire ,

The valve cover gasket has rubber gaskets that surround the spark plug hole , did you replace them as well as the gasket that goes around the cover ?

Did you replace the rubber gromets underneath the bolts ?

Sometime's the valve cover gasket set may not come with the pieces

what condition were your spark plugs in when you removed them ? were they platinum ? sometime when the platinum pieces fall off a spark plug the gap will get bigger causing the coil to work harder , leading to eventual failure . if you replace one of the coils and the problem persists after changing it swap it to the other coils spot and see if it helps !!

when you swap in the new coil put it into the cylinder that had those black sooty plugs in them . that would be my first choice

Pull the instrument cluster out and make sure the electrical connectors are all fully seated in the sockets (remove them and plug them back in) they plug to first, then see if the problem clears up.

Where is my fuel relay located on my 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage S 1.5L automatic

The relay should be in the fuse box in the engine compartment. Details should be in your owners manual.
The relay would need to be checked with a meter to see if it is sending power to the pump.

Mirage Mitsubishi 2000 1.8L Rough Miss when Idle

Might want to look for vacuum leaks. Most misfires that go away with gas are caused by manifold vacuum leaks. The cat code can also be caused by the vac leak. There are different methods to find them and not real easy-but one way is to get a can of carb cleaner spray and spritz around intake areas. When the carb cleaner finds the leak--the car will run good for just and instant. Could be a rubber line or a manifold gasket. Hope it helped. Thanks
