2000 Pontiac Sunfire that Shakes Violently around 45-50 MPH

I drive a 2000 sunfire and around 45-50 mph the whole car starts to shake violently.. I feel like its in the front tires but my g/f seems to think its in the rear tires.. This problem just started yesterday, any Ideas? Also, I think there is a shock on the rear passenger side that needs to be replaced could that be the problem?

Check the ball joints and cv axles this could cause the car to shake violently and most tire stores will check them for you for free.

Jeeps have this problem a lot, they call it the death wobble! On the ford it depends on if you have a 2 or 4 wheel drive vehicle, 2 wheel drive have your alignment checked, I've been fooled by them, and if it's a 4x4 you most likely have a bad steering stabilizer shock..

Likely a rotating part hitting a resonant frequency. It might be a universal joint on the drive shaft, a wheel out of balance or tire out of round. You might try lightly touching the brakes while maintaining the same speed. If it's something to do with tires or wheels, that would likely stop it. My first car would oscillate violently after hitting a bump in the road, due to a loose suspension part.
