I had this problem with the truck stuck in 4HI.... A temporary solution I found that worked was, along the driver's side wheel well, near the firewall, (between the wheel well and the brake booster) there is a vacuum hose that plugs into the vacuum reservoir in the wheel well.... By disconnecting this vacuum hose, I was able to get the front hubs to dis-engage, thereby getting me back to 2WD temporarily until I could get the real problem fixed.... In my case, I had two parts bad, the vacuum switch on the transfer case was locked up, and I had a bad vacuum actuator under the battery box.... But as I said, pulling that vacuum line should temporarily get you out of 4HI until you can fix the real problem... keep in mind, while this line is unplugged, your climate controls won't work, like to switch airflow from the floor vents to the defrost vents.... because they run on vacuum too, and with that hose disconnected, there's not enough vacuum pressure to run them (but also not enough pressure to keep it locked in 4HI, which is why this temporary fix works)
