The 4-wheel drive on our 2001 GMC Jimmy does not seem to engage. It is new to us and came with no manuals. Are we doing something wrong or is it just not working?

First and foremost can you tell me if the lights are showing up on the 4x4 selector switch ? Second if they are illuminated ( should be in 2-Hi ) when you select to go into 4-Hi or 4-Low does the selection flash? And Lastly can you hear a sound of any type (clicking, ticking, thumping) when you push the button?

2000 Jimmy won't go into 4 Hi or auto 4wd. The light flashes but it won't stay on or engage.

Before you go spending money, here's what you should do.
On the passenger side, remove the right lower hinge trim panel (right next to the door) behind you'll find the 4x4 module.
disconnect the 2 plugs for about 30 seconds (module have tendency of locking up)
IMPORTANT... look at the plugs for signs of corrosion (very common)
if OK, then plug them back in and try to Switch to 4 hi.
If OK, no further action needed.
If not, then the system needs to be diagnosed, the module stores the failed code, and a scanner is a must. - Another thing to try is to reset the TCM (transfer case control module). Disconnect the ATC fuse in the under hood fuse block for 1 minute to clear the codes. Cycle the ingnition key on and off 5 times. Reinstall the fuse. Recheck 4x4 operation.

The switch to engage 4 wheel drive is not working.

No the switch is okay there is a transfer case control module that blinks tose lights when there is a problem. You need to fing a compatible scan tool and get the codes from the transfer case controller to diagnose the fault otherwise it will just stay in 2WD.

If you have front end problems like an pitman arm or idle arm needs to be replaced, it may not got into 4 wheel drive. Go to the nearest muffler shop or mechanic to have them lift up your truck to see if something needs to be replaced.
