Have to agree with "richndez" , I'd certainly be inspecting those pulleys & tensioners. Remove the belt, and buy a can of "Brake Clean" spray, and spray all your pulleys & inspect them with a flashlight for gummed up or damage, then take hold of the tensioner pulley, and try wiggling it to see if it moves even the slightest. Then put your fingers on the front of the pulley & spin it back & forth as far as you can with the twist of your wrist, while pushing on it, and pulling upwards, pushing downward (applying pressure), to see if you feel any roughness in it. It should feel completely smooth, no vibration , resistance or noise from it. If your not sure, undo the nut & washer that holds it on there, and remove it. Put a few drops of oil in the center where it spins, and try to work it down in the space between pulley & sleeve it spins on. Put it all back together, and try it & see if better. If squeel is gone, and returns shortly, buy a new tensioner pulley and replace it. Have a real close look for any sign of antifreeze (coolant) , or oil that may be dripping on the belt, or pulley while your at it. That will also cause a belt to start squeeking.

Are you sure its the belt. i had a similar problem with my dodge caravan, i thought it was the belt but it ended up being one of the pullys was squeeking, and also the pully on the belt tensioner.

Do you mean pulleys? Squeaks or Squeals ? Try some belt dressing, or to locate the culprit remove one belt at a time to see what belts and or pulleys are making the noise...

AC Belt squeaks on my 2002 Lexus es300

When belts squeak it's either from dryness wear or tension / tightness / looseness affecting alignment.

Check for tightness and you can spray with belt dressing and try some WD40 on the compressor pulley.

If none of that doesn't stop it it very well could be the clutch or pulley is stiff from non use and could need replacing soon.

A/C on 1988 Mercedes 190E fan squeaks and does not function

Assuming your compressor tries to turn but squeaks due to the lack of tension on your belt. Belt maybe stretched to far for the tensioner to keep it tensioned. If so, replace belt ('88 model should be single belt if multi belts adjust tensioner). If belt slips because A/C compressor doesnt want to turn when clutched in, that should mean A/C compressor seized and needs replacing.
