After filling newly purchased vehicle noted LOTS of gas coming out of underside - stopped leaking after about a pint or so had come out. I did overfill slightly - ie, clicking more in after the first shut off. the ower said they had replaced a fuel pump. also, gas gauge showed close to empty, but car took less than ten gallons - literature says these hold 16 gallons. one more thing, this is a handicap conversion van, with a wheelchair lift added to it, if that akes a difference. and,, one more thing - this van is extremely low mileage - less than 30, 000 miles, did a lot of sitting in the hot florida sun. thanks.
SOURCE: filling gas tank
There is a vent pipe that runs along the fill pipe, they get kinked and cause this concern (tank can't vent air when filling), the only fix is to replace the fill pipe assembly.

sounds like a dodgy mis reading of a sensor caused by electrical resistance which is turning choke on and flooding engine.know the fault but without car in front of me its difficult to diagnose, could be auto choke sensor which is on right hand side of cylinder head ,but not sure.best is probally dealer have you tried spark plug gaps ??25th although this would cause problems with cold starting not hot starting but its worth a look

From what I understand even a "qualified" Ford mechanic has problems locating this and if you look at a pre-2000 Haynes or Chilton manual it shows it being in a completely different location but to answer your question from what I understand (never changed one myself) it's on the passenger side, under the dash and should be by the radio. Should be held on by one or two screws. Also easy to get to if the radio is removed.
SOURCE: Gas Gauge not reading correctly
The most likely culprit is the sending unit in the tank. They are relatively easy to change, as long as you don't have much fuel in the tank. It's a mechanical unit that has a float that raises and lowers with the fuel level, however with age, the floats can develop leaks and no longer float, of the electronic portion of the unit can go bad and not register the proper level. They are replaced and an entire unit, so it doesn't matter which happened, you will need to change the fuel tank sending unit.

If the fuel gauge drops off when you are driving then its a sending unit problem that means you have to drop the tank and replace the float and sending unit. This is a common problem for alot of cars because of cheap gas. If you have to drop the tank check the fuel pump canster for dirt because of cheap gas. Replace the fuel pump strainer and fuel pump filter. If the car or truck has about 100,000 miles you might want to change the fuel pump at that time also just to cover your back. If you take it to a shop they will charge you at least $900 to start. But if you do it yourself it will cost you about $200 dollars maybe alittle more.
