Question about 1999 Mitsubishi Montero
Check that the 4 bolts that hold the column in are tight if they are move the steering wheel up and down whilst looking at the universal joint at the bottom of the column it may be flogged out ( if so you may be able to get a new one) ( the uni can be situated in side the car or out depending on the set up so you may need to get a friend to move the wheel will you crawl under the car and have a look)
if none of the above fix the problem it may be as simple as the bush in the upper section of the column has collapsed if this is the case you can normaly get new ones althoughit is easyer to just get a second hand collum
