What tranmission fluid do I Use for a 1987 Chysler New Yorke?

My 1987 Chrysler New Yorker has a leak, but I'm not sure from where. I think it may be from the transmission so I want to know what transmission fluid it needs.

It should say right on the dipstick. I believe that year was still dexron/mercon. You would be fine using chrysler ATF+4 as it has superseded all previous Chrysler specs for trans fluid. Make sure you checke the fluid when the transmissions up to temp, on a level surface, engine running, and run through all the gears with foot on the brake right before checking the fluid level.

SOURCE: 1992 Chrysler New Yorker transmission won't shift out of first gear.

Hi,

i had the same problem like drushlow in my Eagle Vision, wich has the same engine and transmission. Your transmission is going into safety mode wich allows you to go on but just in 2nd gear. The Problem in my car was the EGR Valve. In other words the engine had a problem and the transmission swiched into safety mode to make sure the engine don´t get any more damage. So i´m very sure your transmission is still OK but there is only one way to find out what is wrong. Drive to a chrysler dealer and read the errror code (that only cost you 20 to 40 dollars). After that you know what´s wrong and can decide what you wanna do.

SOURCE: Will 1987 Chrysler New Yorker parts fit on other

Yes they can, providing the engines are the same, 6 or 8 cylinder.
Try calling an auto parts store and ask them if they can give you a rough idea on the highest year you can go.
I have an 1985 ford and I can get parts up to a 1996.

SOURCE: is there any thing othert than chainging

if you never changed the trans fluid yet, don't
the shavings that are worn mixed with the trans fluid must be retained in your trans to keep the trans shifting smoothly
I have seen plenty of people changing there trans fluid for the first time with 50,000 miles then the trans will slip

Check the brake fluid level. If it is low add the appropriate fluid for your vehicle. If it continues to leak have the brakes repaired or trade up to a 1990 New Yorker.
