Gauges say no pressure in engine 1995 vw golf

Was told oil pump is in engine and I need to replace engine. Runs good for 30 miles or so then engine starts sputtering. No oil leaks but light and buzzer comes on and stays on. Already replaced sensor.

First VW said to change engine. They maintained the car for 10 years. They changed the sensors. I took it to personal mechanic and he had me run it hot. When he put gauge on... zero pressure. (did this twice) He said change engine. Is the oil pump built into the engine? ...thats what I was told anyways.

The dipstick on the Golf gets all chewed up and for some reason those parts can fall into the oil screen (over the oilpan) and it can cause the engine light to go on. Have you tried accelerating when the engine light goes on? You may just need to change out the switches near the oil pump -- that seemed to work for me.

I have a 1995 golf gti that appears to leak oild through the sensor/switch on the oil filter. I have replaced the sensor/switch and this has solved the problem, however the oil warning light that never came on previously when i was low on oil, automatically comes on over 2000rpm and does not go off

I have an old 1992 vw golf, given to me for nothing, but unfortunately leaking oil & transmission fluid pretty constantly (but can't really afford to change it until it actually dies - which can't be long!) - so I check the levels & top up regularly.

3 months ago the oil warning came on suddenly & it was a gushing leak from an oil pressure switch. I was very close to a local garage, took it in & left it. They replaced the switch for me for £50.

Now the oil warning is coming on again intermittantly- but the oil levels are fine & the engine sounds as before - no black smoke!

I wonder if it would be worthwhile having the other switch changed - or is this problem terminal :-(

There are two pressure switches. One for oil pressure and one for a dirty oil filter. Are you sure you've changed the right switch. If car drives for 30 mls it doesn't sound like you need an engine. The spluttering is likely to be completely unrelated to the oil warning I suspect.

Cheers John

Oil pump can be got at when oil pan is removed. However if you have been running engine with no pressure I'd suspect the big end must be knocking by now. If so engine will need overhaul. If not it may be the pump or oil pressure relief valve thatis sticking. Surprised engine has survived your many road tests in this condition.

Oil Gauge Dropping to 5 psi

Hi again Kelea, I'm glad to help!

Kelea, if you do not hear a lot of engine rattling noises then I would say your "Oil Pump" is OK and you need to replace the "OIL SENDING UNIT" which you can buy at Autozone. CAUTION: If you do hear a lot of rattling noises coming from your engine then I'd suggest having someone check the oil pressure. If the oil pressure is low then it could be all kinds of things that can cause low pressures. From engine bearings, to restrictions, to the oil pump itself. I would start with the oil sending unit first and see what your oil pressure looks like. If your oil pressure is good after replacing the sending unit then I'd consider never taking my vehicle back to the shop that told you it was the pump. Hope this helps and have awesome day.

My 1995 Chevy tahoe is hard to start, runs rough when you start out, has high oil PRESSURE

not enough info, what engine, fuel injected? if so what type, multi port, or throttle body? oil pressure is not the problem, it could have a Hi-Perf. oil pump. fix the leaks, they will make a horrible odor. and coolant leaks will make it run hot.

1995 Ford Econoline 150 with 302 engine. Oil pressure indicator starting dropping when idle speed went down, Had a new oil pump and sending unit replaced, still does the same thing. Has 190K on it, now as...

When you had the pump replaced did anyone look at the rod and main bearings? 99% of all low oil pressure problems I've seen has been directly related to bearing wear, not a bad oil pump.
Replacing the pump will give you slightly better pressure temporarily but that won't last very long.
Verify the actual oil pressure using an external mechanical gauge. If it's low (likely it is) go back into the oil pan and use plasti-gage on the bearings to measure clearances.
In reality though, in an engine with that many miles, it's best to either completely rebuild or replace it though.

The oil pressure light and alarm keeps going off on my 2000 vw polo. it is only when the engin is warm after approx 10 miles. sump and strainer have been cleaned and also new sensor been fitted and oil...

Incorrect level. Check level at operating temps and while the engine is running. By sump and stainer you meant that you removed the oil pan off the car and cleaned the pickup tube of the oil pump? I'd suggest hooking up an oil pressure gauge so you'll know which part of the engine is starving oil and setting the warning.

Low oil pressure 93 GMC P/U w/350 motor w/205,000 miles gauge

While engine is running, open the cover where you add oil to engine and see if you see a good flow of oil, if good flow, could be as easy as replacing oil sending sensor. got to realize that if poor maintenance history your engine may not be building enough pressure at iddle to move your hydraulic operated valves, only when you rev it up it will pump enough to run smooth. if running engine too long, you may cause more damage to other engine components such as crankshaft and cam shaft bearings. if you can spare a few bucks, have a good mechanic check your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. another cheap option is to replace oil pump. last resort if you love your truck as much as we do,replace engine or rebuild it. At 205,000 this is a normal symptom, other than timing chain problems, most engines don't make it that far. hope this helps!

The oil pump is relatively easy to change with the engine in situ if it is (commonly) at fault,
Get an oil pressure gauge with a pipe and brass fitting ready on, (borrow or buy cheap from boy racer shop), unscrew the sensor (or ask the garage to for a £5) and plug it directly into the sensor hole after you've been for a run.. When warm, mine sits about 40 at motorway speeds, ten at tickover.

My stop light keeps coming up with the problem oil pressure,i have a golf gti turbo

Get the oil pressure tested with an outside gauge. If you run short of oil pressure, turbo and engine will suffer, as you know....

If you are actually short on pressure, you would need to investigate further, usually no good answers there....

But commonly a transducer fails and gives wrong readings, hope for this result

Gauges say no pressure in engine 1995 vw golf

Get someone to check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, to verify whether you have oil pressure or not. These engine/vehicles, have 2 warning sensors & a control module in the instrument panel. Once you know you have pressure for sure, then you can proceed from there.
