Re: 1996 ford ranger CODE P0171 B1
P0171 - system to lean - bank 1 try this address and it should explain what you need to know...(There is probably some stuff that doesn't apply though)...upon further research I've seen many people pointing to a bad o2 sensor causing this code to appear so that may be the issue. http://www.tankota.net/repair/Repair_Manual/03tacoma/di/eg2rzfe3/cip0171p.pdf hope this helps.........Good Luck!

Clean the MAF sensor. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace/repair as required Inspect all hoses and connections in the air intake system Inspect and/or test the intake manifold gaskets for leakage Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure Ideally you'll want to monitor short and long term fuel trims using an advanced scan tool If you have access, you may want to run a smoke test
On a front to back engine b1 is the drivers bank. On a transverse engine b1 is the front bank ( b1 has cylinder 1, b2 has cylinder 2 in a v type configuration) s1 is always between the engine and the catalytic converter. Usually in the exhaust manifold or the down pipe.
Here we go.... just pulled out our service ticket:
Soooo interesting, I had never looked at these before:
So on 1/10/2005 we took the Vue in, and they did the following:
"CUSTOMER STATES THE SES LIGHT IS ON"
TECH COMM: SES LIGHT IS ON. FOUND FUEL TRIM LEAN CODE P0171 & P0174. RETORQUE INTAKE VACUUM CHAMBER BOLTS AND INSTALL VACUUM CHAMBER SPRINGS PER BULLETIN02/06/01/016A
REPAIR 1: INLET AIR CONTROL VACUUM RESERVOIR - REPLACE
Then, evidently it came back on a week later:
LINE1: "CUSTOMER STATES THE SES LIGHT IS ON"
TECH COMM: SES LIGHT IS ON.
FOUND CODE P0171 FUEL TRIM LEAN B1 CODE P0174
FOUDN MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR FAILED REPLACED MAF SENSOR
P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2)
So why does another fault light come up when brake pedal pressed ,Try reading the codes again with a diagnostic tester that has the relevant codes built into the machine and not a micky mouse device

Hi, since the check engine light (CEL) is on you need to get the trouble codes read. Most auto parts stores will do this for free. If there isn't one nearby, any shop should be able to read it (for a charge) or you could buy your own code reader.
