I have a 2001 Lincoln LS and the Ford dealership is telling me that they can't update my PCM because my mega fuse is blown do a mega fuse have anything to do with the memory

Really depends on which fuse is out. If the PCM has no power it can not be reprogrammed. The issue is what made the fuse break and why does the Dealership think the PCM needs reprogramming? You do not know if the PCM will work until it is powered up unless certain connection points are tested and it shows the PCM is dead. This would be like saying the insides of your PCM are burnt up. If the PCM is burnt up restoring power will not fix it.

Probably a better way to to say it is you need to know if the PCM was burned up and if that is why the fuse broke. The fuse is suppose to protect the PCM before it is damaged. You could smoke another PCM if you connect it up to the car without repairing the problem first.. But the PCM is a computer and the memory can be lost. But like other computers there are Read only programming and programs which can be rewritten. If the circuits are good then the old PCM can be reprogrammed when power is restored.

It has been years since had to replace pcm but you can go to Ford, instructions for program a new PATS key and follow the steps. Instructions cross over for other FORD vehicles as well.

I replaced pcm

only a service dealer can reprogram the PCM to your keys or your keys to the PCM they need both units connected up to the code programmer to do this.

Do I need to reprogram a replacement (salvage) BCM on a 96 Explorer

Hi Mike, I'm glad to help!

Mike I'm not sure with ford products, but I know with Chrysler products we try never to replace a module that has been programmed to another vehicle because on certain vehicles it causes a vin mismatch and the vehicle want start. I'm not sure on FORD BCM's though, you might want to call and ask if its OK to replace your BCM with one out of another vehicle just to be safe. WHY, because in some cases people have had to replace all the modules before the vehicle would start again because of the vin mismatch. This is just a word of caution, check with the FORD Dealer first. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Mike.

How do I determine the correct computer for my 3.8L windstar the Vin is 2fmza5147wbd72215? I am told there are many and I must get the right one.

PCM (computers) don't fail too often

You need to have the vehicle proper diagnosed
& repaired

You didn't say what the issues were.

Any new PCM will have to be reprogrammed,
most likely at a dealer, as not too many shops
will pay for the access to the MFG Site

Forget anything you were told & just have it diagnosed first

How do I replace a PCM on a Ford F250 2002

PCM is located up under your left foot. Right next to the E-Brake. Unscrew the wring harness screws from inside the firewall. I believe they are 8mm. Next remove the screws holding the pcm in place and then reassemble in reverse. Make sure you check with ford for the pcm you install back in the truck for compatibility. It may need reprogrammed if both trucks do not have the exact same features and accessories! They can check the numbers from onee pcm to the other and tell you if it will work.
