SOURCE: 2005 - engine sputters when engine speed decreas

you can try reseting the cpu first by disconnecting both positive and ground wire from battery for about a hour or so and if that does not work. I could be the throttle position which is located on lower right side of throttle body on top of engine removes with 2 screws and one wire harness very easy to replace. And if it is the sensor then u will have to disconnect battery in order to reset the sensor with the computer.

SOURCE: engine light is on,the engine shakes/sputters but

The gas smell is probably unburned fuel left in the cylinders.

Sounds like the car is running rich or too much fuel,a fuel injetor service may be in order, or a carb service.

OIl around the plugs could be from a leakon the valve cover gaskets or a clogged vacum line.

Time for a fuel system service.

Would the electronic distributor pickup cause a vehicle to spit, sputter and cut out at a high rate of speed ????

First you can not put Bosch plugs in it. Also watch cheap wires from parts house. Also check fuel pump pressure at high speed. Also watch for Catt converter plugging. Try unscrewing up stream o2 on both sides then drive. If goes away plugged Catt. You can scan those and see fuel values. Then you can tell. Any codes?

If the sputter got real bad, I could smell what smelled like weed eater gas inside the cabin. As you could also imagine, there is a loss of power.

I am no Honda expert, but a similar problem happened to my ex sister in-laws Ford Taurus. The speed odometer would jump around and it had trouble shifting (automatic transmission). After driving it I changed out the speed odometer sensor on the transmission and it's been fine ever since. I changed out the sensor because if the cars computer cannot tell how fast the car is traveling then fail safes in place go into effect and the computer will do it's best to keep the cars rpm's down based on the speed indicator and not let it shift or shift properly either. If it's getting false speeds then it will shut down the motor when the speed gets to high and allow it to run as the speeds fall (jumping speed odometer needle). It effects the transmission shift points also. It will either shift erratically or not shift out of say 2nd gear, so that the cars engine can't get damaged based on what signal the speed sensor is sending the computer.

Sounds like you have some significant carburetor or fuel line problems. I wouldn't drive this thing at all if you smell gas inside the car. Gas fumes are more explosive than gasoline itself. One small electrical spark and at best, you'll explode and die. At worst, you may end up with burns all over your body and spend the rest of your life in terrible pain.

There may be more specific solutions along shortly, but my older car had similar problems until I changed the ignition module. The "spark box" as it was nicknamed. My car was a mustang, but it only seemed to act up on hot days, and if I just pulled over and allowed the car to cool for a bit it would go again just fine. I'm not familiar with Nissan trucks specifically, but it's another place to consider. Good luck!
