Do you know how to cycle key & retrieve any trouble codes?

turn key , on, off, on, off, on (not start) Now count check engine light flashes. Always 2 digit number, for example: flash, flash, flash, pause flash, flash, flash is 33. or flash, flash, pause, flash. is 21.

55 is end of message. try it and let us know.

SOURCE: dodge ram 1500 engine rpms surge at freeway speed

those sensors could cause the issue, clean the MAF 1st, also clean the idle system using the following procedure, the IAC can cause cruise surge. I use this to cure these problems all the time.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve (IAC) and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Porbably not getting enough gas or dirty. My 88 dodge caravan did that too until I put a cheap fuel-injector cleaner in with the gas, and started giving it more gas even in lower gears driving around town. Worth a try...

All the things that were replaced were not what should have been looked at. The problem is either a temp sensor in the engine, a temp sensor in the air intake called a MAF sensor or the egr system.

My car runs bad when it's cold

Could be moisture condensing inside the distributor cap. My Dodge Dakota did the same thing, would run fine if it was warm, but would run like **** if it was cold, and or rainy, I changed the distributor cap and rotor, problem solved.

My 1986 dodge ram slant 6 when starting cold needs to be pumped hard and stalls and does not run well till it is warmed up then runs just fine.

You need to have the choke adjusted on the carburetor. Are you familiar enough with it to try yourself? Usually only takes a few minutes, and best to do it when engine is cold.

88 dodge ram charger 5.2 ltr engine....intermittant spark

I have a 1988 dodge ram charger with a 318 motor with throttle body. It runs really good when I start it up and drive it for about a half of an hour.
But after that when I step on the throttle a little bit, it hesitates. If I let off a little bit, it will go or if I really step on it, it will go also, but if I just hold it there, it really hesitates If I stop, the idle jumps up and down so much it causes itself to stall. It seems to only do this at low RPM's. If the RPM's are higher it's fine

No, the coil the is not the problem. I would take the ignition module and have it tested. Even though it may not test bad b/c it is still cold, it is more than likely the problem. Have you checked to see if you are getting spark when the trouble occurs?

first ... put a bottle or two of gas line antifreeze in the tank (it sucks up water in the fuel)... if that doesn't sort it out.... your coil pack may be dying

You should buy one of the manuals for this truck (their very cheap on ebay and they are very helpful on all kinds of little tricks, I think I got mine for like $1-2 or so

For my winter driving/summer driving I have completly different setups for my s.a.s. and fuel mixture (richness) screw and have very little troubles (live in MN)

If carburated, I would suspect a sticking choke, making the fuel mix way too rich.
