Mercedes 1998 W210 E240 Auto Gear Selection Problem when cold

Problem - First time of starting the car daily:

The car is parked on a downward sloping incline and is thus reversed
onto the road. On starting the engine fires up immediately and is fine.

On selecting the reverse gear the engine stalls or cuts out. This
happens several times before reverse can be successfully selected,
the car is then fine for the rest of the day and evening.

Selecting reverse successfully is more difficult the colder it is
(+7.5°C or less).

Also, since this problem started the gear change can sometimes be
felt when previously the gear changing was very smooth

The car spent an initial morning with an MB specialist (who has MB
diagnostic facilities), no fault could be found and no error codes
logged. It was however thought that the symptoms were indicative
that an Air Mass Meter change would probably fix it – but it didn’t.
The MB specialist needed the car when cold - so was booked in
for three days, thus covering two mornings of very cold starts of
around +2.5°C to 0°C. Again no faults could be found or error codes
logged.

Any ideas of a fix or who/where it can be sorted would be gratefully
received.

Have you checked the transmission fluid if it is low then the transmission will not have enough pressure on your incline, this could also explain your shift feel changing, it could be time for a transmission service, approx €150.00 inc filter and fluid change with a fluid changer not just by draining the pan. wher are you we may know someone in your area.

Check battery leads and terminals must be clean
Check fuse (blade type)
Check battery with hydrometer,take it to shop

How to unlock gear stuck in park mode in a mercedes c220 cdi auto


It sounds like you parked on an incline.the parking pawl is a bolt which is activated during park and if the car is allowed to roll against it ...I.e. If someone releases hand/ foot brake then it is very hard to release the park selection as it gets licked from normal free movement.you will need someone to rock or push the car towards the the incline to enable the pressure to release off the parking pawl.as it's an automatic I believe you can't do this without the engine running....but I would actually try to release the park before starting car by the above method.

Why can't i get my car to go in gear?


Parking on an incline you "must" use the parking brake. You have damaged the "TBLS" Tranny Brake Lock Switch. Try turning your ignition to just before the "on" position and shifting into Neutral. Then start the car while in neutral and then shift to drive or reverse. Then drive it to a Chevy dealer for repair. This is a major repair requiring special tools.

2001, W210 E240 - 2.6 V6 misfires on 1 2 & 3 (codes P0301, P0302, P0303) when under load and cold - reset adn restart and runs fine ... if I drive very carefully when cold, then no problem, no engine...


While the P03xx codes can be intermittent, sporadic and very difficult to diagnose (bad fuel, malfunctioning injectors, assorted sensors, catalytic converters, etc.), I learned of one relatively simple and inexpensive solution to another Mercedes owner's various P03xx problems. What would cause my 1994 grandam transmission to stop working? the transmission was working fine with no indication of a problem. after stopping on a small incline it would not engage for drive


The transmission needs inspection.It can be gears got stuck up hard due to vehicle parked incline.
May be vehicle needs to be driven on slope for few seconds and then checked.
If can be solenoid issue or gear shift assembly issue.

Shifting when driving


The shifter needs to be inspected.If the gears are shifted automatically.The shifter assembly is got misaligned,it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities.But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this auto shifting occurred then its shifter assembly realign issue.

MY Mercedes E240 W210 has no acceleration


take car to dealership. The cars computer (ECU) needs to be reflashed since there was an electrical disruption when you disconnected the battery. This is only true with some european cars yours being one of them. Call them first they'll tell you so.

When park on a hill or slope. the transmission makes a loud noise when **** to reverse or drive. but on flat surface it's smooth shifting.


before you return the shifting lever to park on a hilly slope please apply parking brake first then shift the lever to park.now when pulling off shift to drive then remove park brake no loud noise.just my 2 cents

just like the armstrong siddleys from when i was a kid ,they had a freewheel device which was mechanical but this is electronic controlled and without a circuit of the computer ECU i couldnt say but somewhere their is a sensor that is reading the RPM and if i knew what it was and how then overide it ,ask dealer if they can do it for you
