SOURCE: transmission problem with 2001 Ford Escort

Sounds like a problem with the shift interlock. Here's how it works:You put your foot on the brake pedal, the brake pedal switch sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on your shifter. The solenoid unlocks the shifter, and you remove it from Park. When the interlock doesnt work,it's usually the interlock solenoid mounted on the shifter malfunctioning, however the brake pedal switch,or wires to and from can also be at fault.

Why is the gear shifter on the 1996 ford escort shake when in 5th gear?

Often this is wear in the linkage and not a problem in the actual gear box. Often the bushings wear or elongate allowing for excessive movement. So when your driving along normal road vibrations that would otherwise be absorbed are being transmitted to the gear shifter and hence the shake you have identified.
In rare cases this is a problem with the clutch being out of alignment and in need of repair.

My 2001 Escort, 70k runs great but a definate vibration at the steering wheel. I notice it more when cold andwhen it warms up it is not as bad but still noticable vibration at the steering wheel. ...

That mechanic wasn't lying. I currently own three of them and I know a lot of people that own them and they all have a rough idle. The engines are internally balanced and they don't have dampeners, so you get the engine vibration transferred to the car and that is what you are feeling.

I have a 1998 ford escort. when in idle there is a vibration in the steering wheel. when i turn the a c or the heat on the vibration gets really bad. do you know what the problem could be?

its the compressor for the AC (you may call it the pump) its trying to jam up and stop turn ing if this happens the blet would slip at first then it would brake the belt off,,,,,the pump it not easy to change as the AC would need to be re-charged with gas

I have a 2001 ford escort. When I run the A/C in park or nuetral not a problem but when I put in drive it really causes excessive vibration. Any suggestions on possiple fix?

chances are the engine mounts are weak due to the cars age(you will feel the vibration more)the vibration is caused by the loading of the a/c and the torque converter.Engine vibation is felt much more on small/high revving engines(try a 1000cc with a/c and auto, great for granny,45 on freeway)
