Question about 2007 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

2007 Camry LE 6 Cyl Piston Slap

I have taken my car into the dealer at 30,000 Km and 60.000 km with concerns about the knocking in the engine. Both times they said it was a normal noise. Finally I took it in at just under 100,000 Kms and they said yes there is a problem and it is piston slap. They want to replace the short block but now Toyota will not honour their standard warranty and they want me to pay for 40% of the repair.

Has there been any recalls or other people with the same problem and what do you suggest should be my next action with Toyota. Everything was documented.

There are no recalls, but there are TSB's out on the problem. A TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin. It's a specific repair procedure that addresses a specific issue. Better talk to a lawyer and think about sueing the dealer.

I have been told the engine mounts are sagging on my Ford Focus (late 2007) with only 30,000 km on clock. surely this should not happen at such low kms?

I find that quite unbelievable. Many of the Ford engine mounts, especially for Focus and Escorts have an offset bushing (not perfectly centered in the mount). Perhaps they are unfamiliar with this, and making a wrong assessment. I have a 1999 Escort with 225,000 miles (362,100 km) that still has the original motor mounts.
Is yours an automatic trans or a standard? Is your car making a knock/clunk, or other symptom, under heavy acceleration or deceleration? As I said, I just find having bad motor mounts this early on, extremely unusual/unbelievable. But I would have to see them first hand.

Yes. Thicker oil can help reduce piston slap on an engine. But piston work requires engine removal and disassembly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 1994 Subaru Legacy and It has started making a "knocking sound". Cked the oil, it was OK

knocks when cold ( Start ), then sort of diminish or disappears when warming up ???

Knocking goes faster when accelerating when cold ???

If Yes, then Piston knocking on the wall of the cylinder . The sound disappears as the engine is getting warmer it dilates and the gap gets smaller.

If this just started,

1. Put quality oil & filter ( Mobile Full Synthetic Oil & Mobile Oil Filter or Purolator )

2. Do not put cleaning agents mixed with oil.

3. Personaly i've put "Restore" Engine Restorer & Lubricant in cars with more then 200 000 km and the results are amazing. But only "Restore". My Volvo is at close to 300 000 km, and it runs great. It's not a cleaning agent.

By experience if the knocking just started you can put an easy extra 100 000 km on the engine before a rebuilt. Quality Oil & let the engine warm up ( 3 mins ).

I have a 2001 Camry LE that seems to have a top end knock. One guy thought that we ran the car with out oil, and something ?dried out? and got warn. We never ran the engine with out oil. So my question is...

The 4 cylinders make a noise when the t-belt slaps ithe plastic housing. The waterpump can also do this. A high exhaust leak can sound like this too. Piston slap is in there too.
