I would have the head gasket checked.
When the engine is cold check the rad and overflow bottle.
These motors have a tendency to leak externally at the head gasket towards the rear of the engine.
Low coolant will cause over heating at the engine and loss of heat inside the car due to vapor locks.

1997 subaru over heats new radeator thermostat water pump

Hi,
Check to make sure the thermostat is installed the correct way around. It's easy to get it wrong.
Bulb part should face the engine block - while the spring should be on the radiator side.

For the price of a replacement - just fit a new one the right way around. Use a new gasket and a smear of blue Hymolar to seal it. Use coppergrease on the thin bolts and don't overtorque.

Over heating

Check water pump or bad radiator there is a circulation problem. As a last resort check and make sure its not a bad head-gasket check oil for antifreeze look under oil filer cap for cream-ish white residue. Good Luck
