1994 Chevrolet s-10 pickup won't start.

I know the battery, starter and alternator are good. could this be the computer chip or a short circuit?

The fuel pump is good. It chugs but won't fully turn over, no backfiring. Before it stopped started the accelerator used to give out randomly.

  • rockalance Dec 19, 2008

The tachometer would drop, and the vehicle would not respond to the accelerator. 15 or so seconds later it would kick back in

  • rockalance Dec 19, 2008

Cable I think, and now it has stopped starting about 4 days ofter the accelerator episode

under the hood there is a fuse panel with some relays on it... find the ones for ignition and fuel .... and perhaps there is one for the throttlebody.... i believe that is what it would have.

replace them.... cheaper then the computer and that may very well be what it is

define give out.... and is it a cable or electronic connection ?

  • Roberta Smith

that still leaves the fuel system and ignition system to troubleshoot... does the vehicle turn over ok.... any backfiring ?

If the tach was dropping then the motor was dying not the accelerator. The accelerator cable is a cable so it can not have intermitent problems. There is nu under hood fuse panel or box. The only fuse box is on the drivers side od the dash and the relays are in the glove box behind an access panel and if they are not in the glove box they are hanging on the firewall or inner fender. I do not know what your problem is but i am hoping to clarify some of the previous discussion for you. Now some questions. Are the dash lights coming on when you turn on the key? What motor? If is a 4.3L is it a vortec or throttle body? Give me more info and i will see if i can help. Remember I am not with the vehicle so I do not know what it is doing so the more info the more answers.

Battery light stays

You have a short circuit somewhere that is draining the battery and making the alternator work that much harder. If the battery and alternator check out, it is most likely a short circuit in the starter solenoid. Try that and see if it solves it.

Have new battery, alternator, starter and battery still goes dead on my gmc 2003 safariif i the voltage on the battery its about 7 and then it dies completly

you have a SHORTED, CONDITION, you need to inspect all wires within this circuit, including all grounds. are all your connections right ? with engine running is your battery showing 12 to 14 volts, is your starter connected properly, reinspect all wiring in this cicuit, are your battery cables in good shape ? make sure no other wires are touching wires in this charging circuit . have a parts store check the charging circuit for you . have them check the battery, and the alternator, one dead cell in battery can cause your problem, also even a new alternator can be bad !!!

95 Pontiac Grand Am GT V6 just died wont start? starter is good, dont know if alternator or what?

If the engine will not crank, and the battery is fully charged, the only thing in play is the starter circuit. The ignition and alternator do not get involved until after the engine is started.
If the engine died and will not crank, you would need to check for voltage at the starter with the key switch in the start position.
You may need a manual with wiring diagrams to trace the circuits.

Electrical short?

Not a short.
Either the circuit to the battery light is bad, or the fuseable link on the starter solenoid is toast. There is a 30 amp fuse in addition to the fuseable link, plus a 15 amp fuse on the circuit for the battery light.
All of these circuits need to be tested.

Battery draining bought a new one same thing maybe alternator not keeping battery charged

maybe. Do you have a voltmeter? Check voltage at battery with engine running. Should be at least 14 volts. no voltmeter? take alternator to parts store for testing.

If alternator is good, check for shorts. Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5925550-dead_battery_troubleshooting . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Car will only start if shorted across to the starter, but within 5 seconds it dies and won't start again without shorting it across. Has good battery, good alternator. Checked all fuses. At a loss?? The...

yes! sound like the anti-thief system is causing all the troubles. the ignition lock cylinder has two small wire that read the chip on the key and send signal to the computer when you insert the key to the lock cylinder. because it ( the wire ) moves every time you turn the key, after a while the wires will break and cause an open in that circuit.
you need to replace the ignition lock cylinder ( you can repair the wires, but I donot recomment.)
you can either have a lock smith to rekey the lock cylinder to your original key, or you can just take the new key came with the lock then have the lock smith make a copy of the new key with a chip has the same resistor with the old one.

Dash dsnt come on/ wnt strt

Dead battery possibly. However, check all connections first on both the battery, pos and neg - as well as the negative on the chassi or block (wherever it's grounded) and the starter.

If these are all good - try jump starting the car. If it start, disconnect the battery (both terminals) and if it stays running the alternator is still good. If it dies, the alternator needs repalced, as well as the battery.

When an alternator starts to lose (or quit holding) it's charge, the battery becomes the main source of power. The battery purpose is to supply power to the starter at starting point, then to all electrical components. The alternator simply keeps the battery charged. So, without a good alternator, then goes the batter after about 3-5 starts and drives.

Also, as a safe measure check all fuses and relays. See my tip on how to test relays.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Battery light stays on r

When your battery warning light stayed on, it indicated that you had a failure in either your alternator or battery. First make sure that your battery is sound by using a multimter across the battery poles with engine OFF: should indicate around 12V and anything less (usually 10v) indicates a shorted/bad battery. Since you cannot start the car, it would be hard to assess if your alternator is working (with the engine running it would show around 13.8V and anything higher, or lower, would indicate a faulty regulator). From your description, it looks that you had a sudden spike (high voltage) in your circuit and if you could confirm that you have no problem with your battery or alternator, then I suspect that either your car computer has been fried or more hopefully that your car security system has been triggered and you need to get it reset: look at your manual or ask your dealer (or Auto Club technical advise if you have such membership) how to reset your car alarm/security system. Hope it helps & Good luck!

Battery Discharge

The alternator is okay but is short circuiting on the battery.

trouble shoot by using a friend's battery and you will experience the same thing.

This simply means the alternator has dropped its charging power.

Replace the alternator.

Dont forget to rate this.
