uuummm im not sure how to explain but i know i havent heard it before and i put in 4 wheel drive and heard it then i when i did i took it out of 4 wheel drive and got out and the noise was gone from inside and outside of the truck. i mean i can crank the radio up and ignore it for the winter when kits icy out, but if its something easy and i can fix i'd like to do it

yea the noise is only in 4 wheel drive and it whins for about 5 to 8 seconds the it stops for about then does it again, its like a loop. Im just running standard all terrain tires im sure exactly what the size is but i know there with in the specs

perhaps i'm misunderstanding you so i will ask .... does the noise only show up in four wheel drive
something did occur to me.... what kind of tires do you have on the vehicle and have you changed them recently

oddly enough and by your own admission you don't drive it much so you may be hearing a noise that's always been there... be that as it may.... pretty much anything that's driven by the serpentine belt will have a bearing.... but i would suspect the belt tensioner first... i wondered what the whining on mine was untill the bearing on the tensioner seized and melted the pulley
in volume how would you describe the noise ?

are you able to hear the noise at idle.... does it only start at different speeds.... trying to narrow down if it's drivetrain or motor

need to make sure you have gear oil in your transfer case it sounds like the splines are not getting lubercation if you burn your transfer case it can cost anywhere from 1,200 to 2,900

1993 sanoma 4x4 push button 4 low to 4 hi , stuck in 4 low . hear clicling by fuze box but light just flashes , help

It sounds as though the solenoid has gone bad and needs to be replaced. If you have recently went off road ot may have gotten dirty. Sometimes cleaning it will work but usually will need to be replaced. This happened to a friend of mine after off roading and try to cross a creek that was deeper than he expected

When you switch it from 2H to 4H you can push the switch at any speed but if you switch to 4L the car must be stop and the shifter is in neutral position.
Anyway here is my suggestion.... I would check the switch it self 1st for proper contact, also check the owners manual if there is a fuse for 4X4.
The worse scenario is the 4X4 computer is dead and if you have problem with transfer case you would notice a whining noise.

Check 4 wheel drive light appears after 4x4 is engaged.

the sensors inside the t-case show that no lubricant is present and just needs a cycle of use to read correctly, or a new tranfer case switch $60 and 30min.
