Whining sound coming from my truck when 4x4 is engaged
It is a 1999 gmc sanoma rarely used 4x4 with 139k. just recently noticed it but then again i can count the number of times ive used the 4x4 on one hand. dont know if thats normal or if i should have it looked at. its not a loud unbarible noise but its definitly there!

It sounds as though the solenoid has gone bad and needs to be replaced. If you have recently went off road ot may have gotten dirty. Sometimes cleaning it will work but usually will need to be replaced. This happened to a friend of mine after off roading and try to cross a creek that was deeper than he expected
When you switch it from 2H to 4H you can push the switch at any speed but if you switch to 4L the car must be stop and the shifter is in neutral position.
Anyway here is my suggestion....
I would check the switch it self 1st for proper contact, also check the owners manual if there is a fuse for 4X4.
The worse scenario is the 4X4 computer is dead and if you have problem with transfer case you would notice a whining noise.
