Starter disabled due to Anti theft on my 1997 Cadillac Deville

It all started a week ago following a drop in temperature of -22 degrees. I go out to start my car and when I turn the key I get the message on my display " Starter disabled due to anti theft remove key wait 3 mins and then start car" I have been having to do this from as few as 1 cycle to as many as 5 cycles. Do you know what's going on and if there is a way to reset and or disable this? I do not have an owners manual.

Thank you,

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls clean all the door switches with special attention to the removal of dirt, mud or corrosion on the connectors/wires. After cleaning, spray with electrical contact cleaner and use the thin tube/nozzle to force the cleaner inside the actual switch assembly. The cleaning would be easy, it is the removal of the switches that might be a bit challenging.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Do you have a small "pellet" in the key? If so, it has more than likely become worn down, and it is not making contact inside the ignition. this can be solved by having a new key made. If that doesnt solve the problem, and you have a little electronics know how, I can tell you how to bypass the antitheft system.

Almost always the key is not at fault. I know for sure heat changes the resistance of the key but it does not happen as a usual thing you would have to apply physical heat. Contact me at albmahone@yahoo.com

SOURCE: how do u disable a

U can bypass it (called the VATS system) but not fully disable it, what is done mimics the key code to fool the VATS module into sending a OK to start signal to the fuel injection computer (called the ECM). go to the web link below for instructions on the bypass.

Anti-theft system has nothing to do with it . Battery cables , maybe , Park neutral safety switch possibly ! With anti-theft system problem you wouldn't a click or anything , that is if the anti-theft disables fuel or the starter . Plus the SECURITY light would be on if it were a anti-theft system problem . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop that knows how to do starter circuit testing >
Starter Voltage Drop
How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit

And what's this identity anti theft system ? No such thing ! The vehicle has a content theft an vehicle theft deterrent system !
This system disables fuel not cranking of the engine. The VCM/PCM will not disable the fuel due to any BCM message for the remainder of the ignition cycle.
If the VCM/PCM does not receive the same password from the BCM as the last learned one, the vehicle will start and then stalls due to the Fuel Lockout.

Anti-theft system

Read your manual or take it to the dealer. It sounds like it needs reset.....if this is a factory anti theft system, only the installer may be able to help you.

the wire that goes to the ignition to the anti theft device is probably broken if you call a good locksmith they can go in through the steering column and fix it same thing happened to my 95 eldorado apparently cadillac designed the anti theft system to coincide with the ignition and is connected to the ignition with two wires that turn as the key is turned the wires twist and eventually they wear out
