At idle, why does speedometer show about 5 or 6 miles per hour and the odometer shows the mileage going up while sitting still?

Could be a bad instrument panel(IP). Rough idle in gear could be a vacuum leak. Maybe a tune up.

What is causing my 93 mark 8 to stall at idle

I had a problem with both the speedometer and odometer in a Lincoln. It may also have an effect on the engine operation. My speedometer showed 45mph standing still and miles were rolling up on the odometer.

For me, it was a bad Alternator. The alternator was shorting out through the case. You should have your alternator checked and if you find out it is good, then the problem is something that is charging the car body.

You are getting a stray current that is messing up your dash and engine controls. You may have a power wire which rubbed through its insulation.

No check engine, stalls cold start, dies after warm

If you haven't done it already you might have them run it for codes to see if it is showing any. Autozone does it for free too.

Have 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. My dashboard went out only showing 2 2 where miles and odometer reading is

It could have went out, but you might check plug, or grounds. If just the odometer and speed quit, you could have a bad vehicle speed sensor in the transmission

1990 caravan with 3.0 engine starts and dies suddenly. may or may not start back up can be driving down the road and it will die, again may or may not start right back up. no codes showing.

The idle air control is not operating correctly, on top of the intake you should see a hose nipple with a black plug, pull it off start the car it will then idle and put it back on, If it suddenly stalls, you will need to clean the throttle body and idle air control.and youll be back on the road in no time

Engine started dying after serpentine belt replaced. Had mechanic check codes, none showed up. After picking up the car, drove 5 miles, engine died again frequently on way back to machanic. He drove and...

If I remember correctly, the serpentine belt change on this motor can be quite involved. It may require the battery being disconnected to avoid shorting out cables. Check for loose battery cables especially on the negative side where it is secured to the engine block.

Electrical issues (2 or 3) with Mazda Tribute 2002

hello there, there is a way to check if the alternator works, just start the engine and run it at idle for a minute or so just to get the engine warmed up. while the engine is running, try to remove the positive terminal cable from the battery (note: no lights, radio, or any accessories operating). the alternator should be sufficiently providing power to the engine. if it dies down the charging might be weak. another way is purchase a digital multimeter and setting it to dc voltage testing. put the tester prongs on the correct terminal( positive to red positive and negative to black negative) test the voltage prior to starting. usually it shall read 12. 3 or a tad higher. remove the tester prongs from the battery terminal and start the engine. then place it back on. the reading shall read 14V plus without any load. sometimes it might read 15V w/c is usually over for certain cars. then turn on all accessories: headlights, aircondition/heater and etc. if the reading on the tester indicates 12.8V and above 13V your charging system is ok.(all this test is on engine idle)

For the battery, my experience is that 2 years of battery duty is quite good already. unfortunately, during these span of duty the battery might give a 12V reading but its strength is not enough to sustain the load. the voltage of the battery is the physical attribute so to speak and ampere is the power or strength of the battery.

for your accessories that died, I think something tripped when you jump started it. but the accessories are easily traceble. I think what's important is keeping the engine in tip top condition and won't let you down during hard times.

hope some of this helps you.

Wrench light is on and odometer shows negative mileage

The negative number means the car should have had it's oil changed that many miles ago. Oil life starts at 100% for new oil & counts down every 10%. At 15% the display will always show, which means it's near time to change the oil.

usersteve83, your oil may have been changed but the timer not reset. Reset the timer as shown...
1. Turn ignition to the "ON" position. (do not start engine)
2. Press SEL/RESET repeatedly until the oil life indicator is displayed.
3. Press & hold the SEL/RESET for about 10 seconds until it blinks then let go of the button.
4. Press the SEL/RESET again for about 5 seconds or until the oil life indicator resets to 100%.

Wrench = Maintenance Minder: Symbol letter & number...
Symbol A - Relace engine oil.
Symbol B - Replace engine oil & filter, Inspect front & rear brakes, Check parking brake adjustment, Visually inpest the tie rods, suspension components, driveshaft boots, brake hoses & line (including ABS), all fluid levels & their conditions, exhaust system, fuel lines & connections.
Symbol 1 - Rotate tires.
Symbol 2 - Replace air cleaner element (dusty conditions every 15K miles) & replace dust & pollen filter (behind glovebox) every 15K miles if mainly dusty or city driving.
Symbol 3 - Replace transmission fluid.
Symbol 4 - Replace spark plugs.
Symbol 5 - Replace engine coolant.

All above are taken from the 2006 Civic EX owner's manual.
