Question about 1997 Ford Ranger SuperCab

1 Answer

Excessive fuel consumprion - 2.3 L 4 cyl engine

I have just purchased a Ford Ranger 4 cyl with 5 spd manual with 315,000 km on odometer, with the expectation of decent mileage (9L/100km). I am getting about 12L/100km. I drive a Saturn car that gives about 6.2L/100km which is better than listed 6.5L/100km so I don't think I abuse the vehicles. I have only had the vehicle 6 weeks but it seems to run fine. I took it to my local mechanic for a diagnosis and no failure codes appeared. It showed a slight misfire on acceleration but very slight. It doesn't burn oil, the air cleaner element is clean. The max temperature of the engine was 88 deg C, so he suggested a hotter thermostat (95 deg C?). Any suggestion where I should start to look.

Not for the home mechanic, but you could try a fuel system service. Basically they add chemicals to your fuel tank via a machine, and these chemicals clean the fuel system... fuel injectors, lines, filter, basically everything... that seemed to help my fuel mileage and also throttle response.

1991 8cyl 2.3 liter ford ranger starts then shuts off

There is no such thing as a 2.3 Liter 8 Cyl. Ford Engine. You must be counting Spark Plug wires because the 4 Cyl engine has 2 Spark Plugs per Cylinder. I would check the Fuel Pressure first then if that is not the problem check the Catalytic Converter to see if it is plugged.

My 06 ranger is a 4 cyl model and I also am looking for a wiring diagram. Have you checked bulkhead connectors on the firewall for security, corrosion etc.? If you find the schematic on line please post the link. Good luck.
