1 check all fuses in both boxes. EFI dont run with them blown,
2 check compression, if bad, 150psi on all, is normal, wide open throttle checked only.
if compression is good, the gasket is mostly good
there 2 more tests in this regard, 1: exh, in rad neck tester, and rad leak down tester) the exh, method sure can warn of early head gasket failures.
3: check for spark at all cylinders, not just 1 and check timing same.
4: ok engine will start now in test fuel for 3sec and die or run.
3sec. only means you lost fueling
runs, now means engine was flooded.

Check intake, compression, ignition, exhaust & vacuum. If the intake &/or the exhaust is blocked/clogged it won't run. If the radiator acts like old faithful while you crank it, it has a blown head gasket, cracked head & or a cracked block. If the radiator is dry or has very little in it, check the oil & the exhaust for antifreeze/water. If you find antifreeze/water in the oil &/or the exhaust, it has a blown head gasket or cracked head/block. Check the compression. If water/antifreeze shoots out of the spark plug holes (take all the spark plugs out for the compression test) during the compression test, it has a blown head gasket &/or a cracked head/block. Check the ignition w/a spark plug tester that you can buy at parts stores for $10 or less. Some of them you just hold the tip close to the plug wire or touch the rubber boot on the spark plug so the tester can pick up the pulse from the wire/plug via induction. Others are put in line between the plug wire & plug. Unplug the computer connectors & check for corrosion. You can clean them by plugging/unplugging the connectors multiple times or maybe you can use a small piece of emery cloth or an emery board. Make sure to blow any dust out of the connector. Check the vacuum hoses. All hoses on a vehicle get brittle & crack w/age, then they leak. Use a vacuum gage to check vacuum. I hope that you find the solution & get your Ford running again.
Crank truck up and turn it off, pull the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose off and see if it has fuel in it. If so that is your problem. Sometimes after you drive them and shut it off the fuel will leak into the intake causing a hard start problem. Just fixed a GMC 5.3 that way .
plug gap 25 th ,too wider gap and it will be hard starting from cold ,as for idle then this could be a vacumn hose perished or not reconnected when head gasket changed ,or a vacumn pipe has been damaged whilst changing the head gasket follow then all back even the best of us inadvertantly damage things or drop a bolt somewhere that always rattles afterwards
very well could be the head gasket. The 3.0 v-6 VIN U (8th digit in the vehicle identification number is a U) had a problem with head gaskets blowing. Typically when they blow the heads crack and need replaced. the repair is VERY EASY to do, i suggest buying th haynes manual and getting started. check the heads and good luck.
