1999 Saturn SL having random starting problems

Randomly my car will decide not to start. When you turn on the key all indicator, interior lights, headlights, etc all work, but the engine will not even attempt to start. There is no click when you attempt to start it and unless you get a push and pop the clutch it will not start. We've checked the fuses in both panels and charged the battery, but nothing works.

Hey man it sounds like it could be a few different things. If you can pop the clutch and get it runing nothing is wrong with your engine. First i would try cleaning both battery terminals and cables then clean the connection at the starter. To do so remove the wiring and clean off any dirt or corrosion with a wire brush. I have seen this quite a few times bad connection at the starter keeps it from getting enough power. If that does not solve the problem your starter may be going out.The easiest way is to remove it and take to your local auto parts store they can test for you and usually for free.

Check and clean all grounds, battery terminals, and starter terminals. Make sure all are fairly snug but dont over tighten and break anything. If no go, test for positive 12 volt charge on starter solinoid wire while a friend tries to crank it. If voltage is good, pull starter and replace.

SOURCE: 1996 Saturn SL, 4 cylinder,

I also had the same problem with my 1996 Saturn SL1, and it also was the starter. I thought it was an electrical problem until, just on a whim I pulled the starter. One of the brushes was almost gone and the commutator looked like hell. I cleaned up the commutator and brushes, and it spun like a top for about a month, until the worn out brush finally died. I also ordered a new starter the same day of the cleaning. Just a word of advice if you will be buying a new starter, go on Ebay Motors and find the store dbelectrical. They sell brand new starters for $49.95 with no core charge plus $12 UPS shipping. So $61.95 vs $150+ at your local parts store....Myself and my friend from work have both bought and daily use starters from them with no problems or complaints to report.

SOURCE: 98 saturn sl1 won't start

If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

SOURCE: 98 saturn sl1 won't start

I have a 98 Saturn SL1 from time to time it would not start, it wouldn't even try. I knew the battery was good. It turned out to be the cranshaft position sensor.

SOURCE: Saturn SC2 Hot Start Problem

My 1997 SC1 would start fully charged after about 5 minutes of cooling off (same as my Busa). If the vehicle draws lots of bettery energy when the ignition switch is turned (the headlights dim as if the battery was week) and all you her is a "tlock" then more than likely the starter solenoid is sticking when the engine gets hot. Age, as well as wear and tear in the vehicle, would cause for the stater, and the starter solenoid, to weaken. When the engine is cool it will start as if the starter was new, but after driving the car for about 10 minutes the problem starts. The engine running hotter than normal (ie.cooling system problems, diferent muffler system, low oil level), no necesary due to overheating, will add to the problem. My solution was a new stater ($115) and a starter heat wrap ($20), and I never had that problem again :-)

I have a 2005 Saturn Vue which battery warning light sometimes come on randomly and then goes for several weeks now. As it came on more frequently I thought the battery was dying so I replaced it two days...

If the battery light comes on while your are driving than the alternator is not charging. The battery light comes on to tell you there is a problem with the charging system not the battery. It is normal for the light to come on when you turn the key to the run position and then it should go out shortly after the engine starts. When the light is on check the voltage at the battery if you have less than 13 volts the alternator is not charging.

1999 saturn wont start

I just got this problem too! It is also taking out the radio, the rear window defroster, the ignition, and certain dashboard lights like the oil lamp. The keyfob doesn't work either. I'm searching the net for an answer but I'm suspecting the vehicle security module that controls the locks and cuts the ignition after car is stolen is defective and is causing this. I'm trying to find it and unplug it to see what happens. The unlock and lock relays are at the bottom left of your interior fuse box. I haven't tried pulling them out yet.
