I hope you will take my advice, because I promise you will be glad you did, It cost twenty dollars to access everything you need, step by step, If you do this all the time you wouldn't be asking that question. My 2000 ford contour drives alittle way then then stops like in neutral

From your description, I will assume you have an automatic transmission. I will assume also that you have checked the fluid level on the transmission dipstick, and it's okay.
One possibility is that the transmission fluid cooler (built into the car's radiator) is clogged, causing the transmission fluid to overheat and the transmission itself to malfunction. This usually will also cause hard shifting when hot. If this is the case, the radiator would probably need to be replaced, the transmission completely drained and flushed, and filled with new fluid.
Anything else points to an internal fault in the transmission itself. This calls for a good transmission shop to remove, repair, and reinstall the trans.

2000 Ford Contour Acceleration Probs between 40-55 mph

Transmission was initially misdiagnosed as being ok. The problem was the "range sensor", which showed up on the transmission shops diagnostic computer on a second look.

Replacement of the range sensor solved the problem. This was a $150.00 fix. Unfortunately a lot of other cash was spent because of the initial miss.

The range sensor is located just to the left of the battery on the automatic transaxle. It is connected with 2 bolts.

this is what you have to do you have to have a bar across the top of the engine with a chain so the engine does not fall down you also have to remove the axel on the driver side making sure you have jack stands and the car supported for safety but you can also go to auto zone and have them to print you a step by step diagram
