Question about 1990 Mazda RX-7

Convertible will not rise or lower

The Convertible top on my 1990 top will not rise or lower. Is there a connection that I need to connect or is this a bigger problem? The previous owner did not want it to rise or lower so he took it to a shop to disconnect something. How do I undo this?

There are many things that could have been disconnected.
Take it to the same shop and have it re-connected.
If the previous owner will not tell you which shop did it, he is probably lying and the system is simply broken.

Have 2003 vw beetle convertible have been told relay under dash has a fuse on relay that controls top going up and down could someone explain in detail where it is located


There is a thirteen position relay panel that contains the 30A CONVERTIBLE TOP FUSE and the 30A CONVERIBLE TOP CIRCUIT BREAKER. The fuse has a RED/WHT lead connecting it to the convertible top control module. The breaker has a red lead connecting it to the convertible top hydraulic pump and relays.

05 mustang convert.no open/close,makes clicking sound.2 relays,fuse,switch checked,new motor/hydraulics.Are there other relays,open close sensors? Top works UP when grounded externally, but not DOWN.


Principles of Operation
Convertible top operation is controlled by the smart junction box (SJB). When the convertible top raise/lower switch is operated, the SJB commands the front and rear windows to the full down position. Window operation is disabled while the convertible top raise/lower switch is being operated. When the SJB receives a full down input for both rear windows, it commands the appropriate relay closed to raise or lower the convertible top. If the SJB does not receive a full down input signal for both rear windows, convertible top operation is disabled.
The convertible top assembly is a floating frame, Z-fold design. The main pivot brackets are attached to the body, and the convertible top frame side rails expand or fold when the convertible top is raised or lowered. The LH and RH stay pads are attached to the convertible top frame bows, and provide the main source of tension for the convertible top material. When the convertible top is in the full down position, it stores in the compartment behind the rear seat backrest. When the convertible top is in the full up position, the body provides a stop which the convertible top frame number 5 bow contacts to provide a weather seal for the convertible top against the body.
The convertible top hydraulic system uses a 12-volt reversible pump and motor assembly. When active, the pump uses hydraulic pressure to extend the hydraulic lift cylinders to raise the convertible top, or retract the hydraulic lift cylinders to lower the convertible top. The convertible top motor/pump assembly is equipped with a thermal circuit breaker. The circuit breaker typically resets after 5 minutes depending on the ambient temperature. The thermal circuit breaker cannot be repaired and must be installed as a unit with the motor/pump assembly. In the event of a hydraulic system failure, the convertible top cannot be operated manually.

    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  1. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • SCP or ISO circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 .
    • No response/not equipped for SJB; refer to Section 419-10 .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out self-test diagnostics for the smart junction box (SJB).
  1. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Smart Junction Box (SJB) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
  1. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart .

I have a 2007 mustang convertible top that will not go down. with key on windows go to park down position but no hydraulic pump sound checking fuses to ensure good power. where should i begin?

you may have to spray up the latch they do that sometime

Top worked fine yesterday but today tried to let down only clicked


It is a hydraulic pump that applies pressure to the 2 hydraulic pistons to raise & lower the top. So, check for something obstructing movement first.

The convertible top:
  • is motor-driven.
  • requires parking brake engaged to complete circuit for operation.
  • is equipped with a back window glass (42006) . The back window glass is permanently attached to the folding top back window curtain (52500) and cannot be opened.

My convertible top wont go up


You are probably low on fluid.
Behind the rear seat is the motor/pump/reservoir.
With the top down, fill the reservoir with ATF.
Cycle the system a few times.
Repeat till the reservoir will accept no mor fluid.
Chedk the lines and cylinders for leaks. The fluid must be going someplace.
You can change it to a manual top by removing the bolt at the top of the cylinders and lowering the both shafts down into the cylinders.

Window up and down


if ur buying new, you can only buy the whole assembly....motor and relay...you may be able to pick up a motor at a salvage yard, but they are hard to find...as far as getting to the window motor....remove the seat....remove the panel on the side....remove 2 top bolts and 1 lower bolt...you will have to remove the insulation tape to get to the lower bolt....then you can pull it strait out, disconnecting the wires connected to the bottom of the motor.

Letting the top down


I had the same problem for four years until I purchased a CD from Ebay titled "BMW E30 Convertible". I discovered, that I was opening the top up incorrectly. The top works fine. Unlatch the top from the windshield frame, then lift up the back half of the top, unlatch the top lid, rise it up and lower the top into the compartment, close and latch the soft top lid. Hopes this helps.

There are two latches hidden above the visors.Release the latches and push the button for top down.

Convertible top's motor is out, is there another way to get it up?


you will have to find out where the motor is and disconnect the arm or mechanism on the motor and then you will be able to pull it up manually also just check the fuse for the top motor if you havent already hope that helps.
