My service 4wd light appeared on my dash and my 4wd is not workin

I own a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71. I have it on auto and last night i was driving in the snow and the service 4wd light first came on. I tried switching it on manually and it does not seem to be engaging. Any type of help would be appreciated.

First of all has the problem changed since this post? Does the lamp stay on all of the time since the original occurrence? If it is a "service 4wd" lamp that is on, given the driving conditions and you suspision 4wd is not engaging most likely the power-train control module (PCM) sees a fault. As a result to protect power-train components the PCM could prevent the transfer case from shifting into 4wd.

How mechanically inclined are you? Have you or someone else serviced the truck recently (i.e. oil change, transmission work, differentials and transfercase oil drained, exhaust work)? Start with an inspection of the undercarriage: Check the oil level in the transfercase then differentials, look physical damage or binding in the transfercase shift linkage, check for a loose connector at the transfercase (i.e. oil level sensor, position switch), check along the wire harness to the transfercase along the frame and as it passes exhaust heat shielding and other components looking for physical damage that may cause an open circuit or short to vehicle ground. Hope this helps.

Transfer case engages/disengages via a vacuum line. If the vacuum line is cracked, often by age and cold weather, it has to be replaced to allow a good vacuum pressure.

Sounds as if the transfer case control module has gone bad and grounded the circuit to the 4 low actuator. The module is located behind the headlight switch in the dash. You could try tapping the actuator on the transfer case lightly with a hammer to see if it releases.

How to reset my 4wd light? I just installed my new 4wd buttons on my 2005 gmc sierra z71, and my 4wd light still comes on what should I do?

There is no such thing as a reset, if the light stays on a fault exists in the 4X4 control system, the control module has sensed that and turned the light on to alert you to the problem. It is likely that the power transfer case actuator motor is the problem or the wiring to it.

2000 Gmc Sierra. 4wd wont engage, buttons on dash just blink

I had the same prob with my 2000 GMC Sierra 4x4 z71. They replaced the 4wd module in the dash and everything worked after that. Was about $200. The part itself was about $150.

Ned to change the oil in transfer case

The Z71 typically comes with the auto 4wd transfer case (cannot remember the GM number). This requires AutoTrak II, which is available at a GM dealer. Do not use any other fluid in this transfer case! The previous post was correct in the location of the two plugs, but not on the fluid (the other types of transfer cases by GM use ATF). The transfer case is located under the truck right under the cab. There is a small skid plate under it, and a large driveshaft leaves the rear end of the case heading to the rear differential (axle). If you have the manual or electronic w/o auto 4WD transfer case, you can use Dexron III, but Dexron VI is a better fluid that is also now available at your local auto parts store. Again, if you have the AUTO 4WD button in the dash, use the AutoTrak II fluid from the dealer.

THis would be way too much to walk you thru. If you like to do your own maintenance-buy a chilton manual online or at your local auto parts. It will save you time and $
