Brake pressure switch?

I have a 1997 ford escort lx w/ auto transmission, everytime I start the car when I step on the brake to put it into gear the shifter gets stuck. I have to pump the brake or hold it down very hard for a few minutes and eventually it kicks in and goes into gear. I believe there is some kind of brake pressure switch that is suppose to sense when you step on the brake so this doesnt happen?? Can someone please help!!

There is a shift lock switch located near the brake pedal , it operates a solinoid that ensures you have you foot on the brake before you can select a gear , most times it's the switch

I had this problem awhile ago. There is a little circle next to the shifter. Pop it out or brake it out. Stick a flat head screw driver in there. Move it to the right or left. You should be able to feel when you got it right. That'll unlock it.

1995 Ford Escort Wagon Automatic, Won't shift

Hi there,

Most modern automatic cars require the driver to depress the brake pedal first, to allow releasing the gear out of Park.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

Do I have to remove the engine to remove the transmission from a 1997 ford escort lx automatic?

Yes and no. If you don't remove the engine the transaxle has to come out from the bottom in most cases. That means the cradle has to be lowered and the suspension taken apart.

Why wont car shift into gear

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

You may want to start adjusting the brake pedals. If it detects that you are not stepping on the brake then it won't shift into gear.
If the gear is moving but won't shift gears while running then you may want to start on replacing the transmission fluid. It can be burnt that's why it's not operating properly.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

2001 ford escort stuck in park lever won't move starts normally

If it wont move into gear, the safety switch is malfunctioning. You can take the plug out of the hole on the upper right side of the console just to the right of the gear shift lever. put a philips screwdriver in the hole and press down. this will manually release the gear shifter mechanism.

How do i tighten the parking brake on my 1997 ford escort LX

If you can locate the Parking brake cable under the chassis, there should be a clevis that tensions two cables together, at this point you should be able to adjust the cables toward each other to tighten connections.

We cant get car out of park we checked linkage and the bolt holding linkage to arm on transmission is barely threaded in

have you checked to see if the brake lights work? most new cars need to press the brake to release the gear selector. if the brake light switch or circuit does not work properly it will not disengage the lock for the gear shift
