I have the same problem. The ignition switch only turns to position 2 and will not go beyond that point.

I had the same problem on my 2004 S60. Had it towed to the dealership where they replaced the ignition lock cylinder. Now there seems to be a short or some type of breach in the security system Could the 2 be related?

I have the same problem. It's the mechanical portion of the ignition switch (the front piece, the electrical portion of the electrical switch is behind it). $700 in parts + labor.

    same problem 2004 xc90

Same problem on 2004 XC90 T6. The part takes about 5 days to deliver so expect to wait. I was able to get it started (with some force), but with no functional electrical system when it is running, it might as well be undriveable.

Try this it worked for my s60 and recently on my C30

Procedure
1. Sit in the vehicle with all doors closed.
2. Turn the ignition key on and off five times (not to start position, but the on position) and on the fifth time leave in the on position.

2004 volvo S40 CAR WILL NOT START

Rock your steering wheel back and forth rapidly while turning the key. This will help the columb lock engage or disingage so you can turn the key all the way to the start position

Volvo xc90 key will turn from 0-1 but wont turn from 1 on to start the vehicle, all lights and radio goes on but the key wont start the car???? all of SUDDEN

Ok, this just happened in our 2000 V70. The key would turn to position 1, the srs light pops on, but the key refuses to turn to start the car and the shifter is stuck in park. I pulled the oil dipstick out, lightly coated the key on ALL sides, inserted it back into the ignition and turned it a little forcibly. It turned so I cycled it back and forth a few times and it was good to go. We were stuck so this was a last ditch attempt to get going....I would suggest using clean, 3 in 1 oil to lubricate the ignition.

2004 XC70 Ingnition Switch will only turn from 0 to 1 position

sometimes your steering wheel gets turned and locked when the key is put , all you have to do is turn the wheel in a direction that it will move a few degrees to take pressure off whatever it is in the steering/ignition system and you should be able to turn the key all the way, happens to me all the time on pretty much every car I've had.
