Car is losing coolant out the overflow and overheating

2002 mazda milinia, the cooling fans are not kicking on when needed, and fan on passinger side of car sounds like the bearings are out of it. I want to know how find promblem, and if one fan goes out will it cause other fan not to work.

    I have a 2002 mazda millenia s, with the miller cycle engine. i just hit 72000 miles and i have incurred the same problem. i'm going to start with replacing the thermostat (assuming i can find, i pop the hood on this thing and it looks like a rat's nest).

Sounds like a thermostat or possibly even a collapsed coolant hose but mor than lkely its the thermostat, easy fix and cheap...

My 1999 Chevy Malibu is losing the coolant though the overflow hose by the resevior I've had my head gaskets replaced there is no overheating no water oil mix, but my radiator fans arent working I


Sounds like you need to disconnect the Radiators' electric fans and have them tested. You absolutely must have them working, or your car will overheat. Check to see if the Temperature guage is working.

You need to go to a good autoparts store and have them test the fans and charge and test your battery. You may need some sensors to activate the Radiator fans, but you could be running the battery down with shorted cooling fans.

There are also Relays which work with the Radiator fans. The overflow will stabilize once the water gets into where it belongs. Make sure your Thermostat is not clogged with the sealer.

It's usually the thermostat, I woud pressure test the cap. It may need to be flushed. Are the fans working? Is there a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze

No, you can't add too much coolant. Rather, it does not hurt anything if you do. Did you add it to the radiator, or to the overflow tank?

Let it cool, then remove the radiator cap, and if needed, add coolant to the radiator. Put the cap back on, and fill the overflow tank to the "full - cold" line. Start it and run it a few minutes and look for leaks. If you find no leaks, drive it for a day or two, then let it cool and check it again. If it is down a lot (without overheating), you have a leak somewhere. If you lose enough coolant, that will make it overheat. However, if it overheats, that can cause loss of coolant, when you stop the car, you will see steam and smell coolant, and often hear it boiling.

If it overheats again, make note of when it happens: driving on the highway, or stop-and-go around town. Overheating on the highway usually indicates a clogged radiator, while in-town overheating usually indicates a bad cooling fan (you don't need the fan above about 30 MPH). A bad fan is usually the fan relay, but it can be the fan thermostat (different from the engine thermostat), or a bad fan motor.

possible head gasket do a preasure test on the coolant system to see if it loses any coolant or presure drops and check for leaks hope this helps

At first the ac stopped cooling. then the car overheated with the ac off. there appears to be no loss of radiator coolant


Turn your engine on with the A/C on high. Watch your cooling fans mounted behind the radiator to make sure they are running. If they're not running, you have something wrong in the electrical side of the fan system. The cooling fans are essential for cooling as they pull air through the radiator when the vehicle is not moving fast enough to cool the coolant. The problem probably lies in a relay, so replace the high speed fan relay with one you know works but is not essential for moment (rear window defrost or something similar) and put that in the relay spot for the high speed fans. If the fans kick on now, you need to replace your relay and this will probably also fix your overheating.

My 94 mazda 323 is boiling in the overflow tank. i have a ajustable thermate state that fix the promblem last time but now its doin it again. check by racq and they said that my fan is not kicking in.


I have had a similar problem.Check all of your Radiator and Heater hoses for leaks. The cooling system doesn't need to lose much coolant to create overheating problems. If you find no leaks -check that your bottom radiator hose isn't sucking flat and restricting coolant flow.

Martin, You should replace your fan motor. One fan is for ac and one is for normal driving without ac. Your car is getting to hot. Hope this helps, these fans are available aftermarket as a whole assembly. Check out ebay I have seen them on there I have a wholesale company I buy them through.
