Question about 1997 Land Rover Discovery

1 Answer

My engine cuts out like it is running on two cylinders after it has been running and is warmed up. It does not lose RPM's but it scrubs off speed and it will do it running 70 mph or 35 mph and everything in between. I recently had a tune up done but it did not help. In fact, it may be worse. What else can I check?

What should idle psi and 2500-3000 rpm psi with a warm engine be.

compression pressure is read at cranking speed with throttle wide open. For petrol engine it is 155-165 psi hot dry with an allowed variation of no more than 10% between adjacent cylinders and around 175 psi hot wet (OIl injected to seal rings)
For a diesel engine it can be 550 psi -650 psi hot dry at cranking speed with the only engine being test while running being a detroit diesel 2 stroke
There is no compression reading done at rpms as it is meaningless

Increase then decrease idle when engine is cold especially

cold engine idle surge. (problem)
RPM range of surge not stated
300-700 or 800 to 1500? (range is critical to diagnosis)

bad fuel
running summer fuel in winter (running old fuel?)
needs a tune up bad, see the list in the operator guide.
idle speed controller, sticking or EGR valve same. (clean them)
location not stated, so cant guess about local air temps.?
no other symptoms, lack of engine power? etc?
was it ok last week, or better, when was the last time it was OK?
1week, 1year?
surge , causes, on a tuned engine might be:
1: too lean. so lean the ISC can not control idle. rpm low, stalling
2: too rich, flooding, stalling, spark plugs foul (look at them)
3: weak compression in 1 or more cylinders.
4: bad spark.
5: air leaks, in the plenum causing , ISC to lose control.
why high RPM?

especially?
well that means it fails hot too.
and there is a simple tests. for hot surge.
is engine fully hot? 180F and holds solid there?
say rpm is about 800
and you turn on head lights, heater fan and (not AC) and defrost.
the RPM must hold or the ISC is failing.
ISC -= idle speed controls. (all EFI has this function)

My 1993 Ford Festiva 1.3L occasional engine hard start, sputters on start up then runs fine, but sometimes has a slight "cut out" on gentle acceleration, problem clears up but comes back at lower speeds....

sound like your throttle positioning sensor or even yhe throttle it self it is electronic as far as i know the tiny metal bands come of and if the reading from the pedal sensor is incorect fuel shut of wil ocure

Driving at low speeds on warm day's engine starts

If your CEL comes on but it doesn't store a code sounds like you have a faulty computer board connection, warm up your vehicle then tap on your computer case with a wooden handle of a hammer see if it causes a problem when doing the tap test.

Engine idling gone crazy

check for lose vacuum hoses or lose throttle hose make sure you air flow meter ducks are tite if you see everything ok then the idle speed control valve could be dirty with a little carburetor cleaner spray while engine is running open throttle and spray into throttle till you can see throttle is clean you may have to do this a few time hope this information is useful good luck

Engine bk firering & lose of compression.

Backfiring after warming up can be from many things.

One that comes to mind is carbon deposits on valves, causing them to not close properly. The carbon deposits would also heat up and then ignite air/fuel mixtures before the spark plug can fire.
Or you would have hot exhaust gasses leaking back into the cylinder on intake and that would ignite the fuel.

Tac gauge fluctuating, and engine running rough on acceleration could be a vacuum leak, do you hear a hissing sound when the engine is running? listen closely under the hood. If you have a vacuum leak you would lose power and your RPM would fluctuate oddly. As for the backfire however, there are probably more than just one problem. Its hard to say for sure.

So please, more details, noises you hear, when exactly everything happens etc.
What speed and RPM the engine begins to bog down at, does it stall? What range is ur tac fluctuating at? anything you can think of, throw it on there.

Hope this helps you

When warmed up, the engine (2.7) may miss erratically

1391 is lose off cranksensor or cam sensor like code 340 i would by a cam sensor for that code.356 sounds like a bad coil on #6 which there are one per cylinder .dont worry about code 432 for now.
