There are no gears in the speedometer. The gauges are driven by small "stepper motors" which are soldered onto a pcb. The stepper motors are a known issue at GM. If your vehicle has less than 70K miles GM will replace it. If they refuse and you are comfortable using a soldering iron you can repair the cluster yourself. Folow this link:

The speedometer gauge and RPM gauge is not working. The speedometer gauge goes to the max while I am driving. The car itself seems to be running ok. Help! It is a Yukon Denali 2005.

I suspect that your sender is malfunctioning. Todays speedometers and RPM is sent from a sensor/sender near the drive shaft. A magnet on the drive shaft is sensed and the revolutions are converted to RPM and speed.

Replace spedometer cable 2003 gmc yukon xl

There is no speedometer cable on the 2003 Yukon, if there is no transmission issues like shifting problem. Your instrument cluster has gone bad, to pinpoint. Your stepper motor to your speedometer gauge has failed and needs to be replaced. You can do a search on Ebay for the stepper motor for around $10.00 which is better then the $400.00 cost of another instrument cluster.
There was a TSB on the replacement of the instrument cluster for your Yukon free of charge. The only cost to you is the labor charge unless your willing to do the job your self. Just go to the Gm Dealer and give them this TSB Number: # 07187C: Special Coverage Adjustment - Instrument Panel Cluster Gauge Needle Function - (Mar 20, 2009)

Some customers of all 2003-2004 model year and certain U.S. 2005 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge. Special Coverage Adjustment This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

For verified failures between 70,001 miles (110,001 km) and 80,000 miles (130,000 km) on U.S. vehicles, dealers are to provide the customer with an instrument panel cluster (IPC) only. Any additional costs, including labor to replace the instrument panel cluster, will be the responsibility of the customer. Dealers are responsible for the return of the customer's IPC back to the Electronic Service Center

Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

2005 GMC Yukon XL speedometer stuck on 15mph, how can I fix?

You can check the speed sensor on the transmission. Tap the cluster to see if it will reset. If not remove and unplug the cluster if the guage stays its just stuck if it falls when you unplug it you might have a short somewhere.if it does stay you can take the plastic housing apart and try to reset it by hand.

Speedometer does not work properly

I have not heard of this before but I do know there is such a wide spread problem with the cluster (speedo) GM has extended warranty on several years and I expect they will add more years as time goes by.

Many of the problems I encounter have been speedo's showing a faster speed than actual, 100mph plus.

Good Luck

My speedometer is stuck

Typically on a Yukon instrument cluster this is caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board, it can be fixed though. Check out this page for more about Yukon speedometer problems and how to get it fixed - Yukon speedometer fix

I had the same problem with my 2004 yukon. It seems all the gauges in the insturment cluster are known to go bad from 2003-2006 in GMC and Chevys. The deaerships are trying to sell you a new instrument cluster which is pretty costly if your warrenty is up. I repaired the circuit board on my insturment cluster myself and everything is working fine now. Since hearing abouth this problem I have started repairing the insturment cluster as a side business. If your vehicle is out of warrenty and your intersted shoot me an e-mail (
