2000 Montero limited steering column noise / squeaking

Hello,
I have a 2000 mitsubishi Montero Limited that is developing this 'squeaking' noise when i turn the steering wheel. It seems to come from the steering column and it isn't audible during normal driving conditions. It rears it's ugly head on chilly mornings and/or when i turn the wheel very quickly (usually when parrallel parking).

does anyone know of a solution for this problem?

thanks,

scott

it's hard to describe but i dont think it's coming from the panels rubbing. it kind of sounds like rubbing your hand over a balloon but a bit deeper

thanks for the clarification. The horn does work. I'll try to spray the area when i get home tonight and i'll report back to you.

    thank again for your help.

I have exactly the same problem with my 2001 Montero Ltd. Sounds like rubber on rubber or "balloon" noise. Very annoying.

Did the Armor All spraying at the two locations stop your squeaking problem? If so, I will try it.

Did the armor all or WD 40 fix the problem. Where exactly do I need to spray it? Any other suggestions?

If horn don't work then it's probably the clock spring.also if airbag light on and horn don't work good chance it's clock spring .dealer should fix that. Airbag could deploy..not a diy. Also if lube the boot at firewall where the steering shaft goes through and between the steering wheel and column like behind steering wheel. .it could be rotor coupler in steering wheel wore out and noisy.or just sell the car lol

2001 montero sport xls sport horn on my alarm how do i stop it i pulled the fuse but it is still goint

You need to determine if it's the horn or the alarm. My Montero (not Sport) had 3 horns. All 3 of which go off w/ the Alarm, but only one is connected to the horn on the steering wheel. I could not make mine go off w/o pulling the relay under the hood.

My spring was bad in the steering wheel. I was able to bypass the wire using instructions that I actually found on a Mitsubishi Forum. Link below:

2005 Ford Expedition steering wheel squeaks

My Lincoln LS does that sometimes

Unrelated, but a recall on mine ,was to change the
Power Steering Fluid, which along with the trans fluid,
should be done every 3 years anyway

I think the squeak is in the column,I haven't figured it out yet,
but years ago the dealer put an additive in the P/S & fixed
the recall squeak
