1988 caprice classic turns over but wont start.

My caprice, 1988, turns over but will not start for some odd reason. I thought it could be the points in the distributor cap, but come to find out, this year caprice doesnt have points....

rule of thumb you have to have fire, fuel, and air...if your rotor or ignition coil isnt creating fire, start there and move on to fuel delivery components e.g. fuel filter, pump, carburator...etc and go from there

There are many things that could be wrong... evn though this caprice does not have points it does have a cap mounted coil that could be bad, also under neath the dist. is wuts called a pickup coil this coul also be bad. try a simple tune up first..plugs wires cap and rotor, new cap doesnt come with coil so you have to swap your old one into the new cap. getting a new coil wouldnt be to bad of an idea

If the oil pump fails, the engine will seize in minutes so it isn't likely the problem. Removing the negative (black) battery terminal first, clean the battery terminals and clamps. You can buy a cheap tool at any auto parts store for this. If, after the battery is reconnected (negative last), it still doesn't consistently start, then the terminals at the starter may need cleaning or the negative cable termination at the other end from the battery.
These points are very sensitive to corrosion and any even small resistance can cause hard starting since the starter draws over 100 Amperes and at only 12 volts, any bad connection can cause a problem.
