The steering is very sloppy. Steering wheel truns both ways without the wheels moving

You have a worn steering rack or a worn universal joint on the steering column. Also check for badly worn tie rod ends, especially if you are seeing unusual wear on your front tyres.

Blinker is loose in steering column? Making noise whn i trun and not working properly

It is not loose. It is broken. The canceling mechanism is made out of plastic. When they break they just kind of flop around in the steering column. It won't cancel the turn signal when you complete your turn either. These are really cheap to buy and easy to replace. You will need to get a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel to get access to the turn signal mechanism. There are only three screws that hold it in place once you remove the steering wheel. Then just unplug the old one and remove and do the reverse to install.

A headset wire stuck (wound) in crack of steering column in 1998 Contour. How do we retrieve it? Can the wheel be dismantled?

Yes - the steering wheel can be removed, just be prepared for the wire to be smashed or mangles and unusable. Look on the back side of the steering wheel - you will see some small holes for the retaining screws for the center piece of the steering wheel. If your model has an airbag in the wheel you will need to disconnect the battery to prevent activating the airbag.Remove the panel below the steering wheel to access the harness for the airbag and unplug. Now remove those retaining screws and the center piece of the wheel. Now you will see a large nut on the center shaft of the column. Before you remove the center nut, look at how many threads are exposed above the nut before removing. Lock the steering wheel and remove that nut. Now you will need a steering wheel puller. Find the fasteners that fit your wheel and mount the puller, Turn the puller shaft 3 turns and try to remove wire - if it won't come out then you'll need to completely remove the wheel to extract the wire. Place the wheel back on the column shaft and use that center nut to re - install the steering wheel. You may need to place that nut socket over the shaft around the threaded part and tap lightly to seat the wheel far enough to use the nut to seat the wheel back down. Press steering wheel until it sits where it did in the beginning. Re - install center piece, plug in airbag and replace that lower panel. Your local auto parts store may have a steering wheel puller for rent - if not, they are not expensive to buy ( should be less than $10.00 USD).
Hope this helps!!

Reasons for "play" in a steering wheel. I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 club cab and can turn my wheel almost 2" without the wheels turning. I had it looked at from a local garage and they found a broken sway...

Could be more worn steering parts such as the pitman or idler arm. IIRC, the 98 Ram has a steering gear box, and not rack and pinion steering like newer models.

If the issue is not up front under the hood, you could also have a worn intermediate (sometimes called a sector shaft) . This shaft goes between the steering column and the gear box or rack and pinion.

My 1998 saturn has a steering wheel problem. It is locked in park and will not unlock do I need to replace the whole steering column I can't start it ect..

Well, if your wheels are turned to one side it may just be that you have to put a lot of pressure on the steering wheel, which in turn puts a lot of pressure on the ignition lock, making it seem like your steering column is locked. You will have to take the pressure off of the ign lock so you can turn the key. I am talking about some serious pressure. Ask someone you know that is a "bigger person" to turn the wheel while you turn the key from the passengers side.

Steering wheel clicks on 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon

steering column bearing sounds like a worn out steering column... jack the front wheels off the ground both sides relieve load on steering wheel to see if it lessens the amount of feel and noise, if it does it shoud be the column bearing, replace bearings or complete column,,, also try with the wheels off the ground and safely supported to manualy steer the wheels by hand and see if you feel in roughness or hear any noises, should some minor resistance but be smooth in it movement if everything suspension and steering component wise is in good working condition... please rate my help.. thanks...

Locked steering wheel.

If your key won't turn, you can move the steering wheel back and forth until it does or try to hold the steering wheel to the left or right while turning the key. This happened with my car when I parked with my wheels turned in. Now I make sure the steering wheel and my wheels are straight when I park.

How to pull off the steering wheel

You don't have to remove the steering wheel. Take the plastic covers off around the steering column then you will see 2 screws holding the switch to the side of the column.
