Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder

3 Answers

On a very cold day here my mitsubishi eclipse would not shift out of park.
My daughter and all her friends tried to no avail to **** it.
She had it toed to a local shop where it sits waiting on someone to look at it.
She is about 40 miles away and i have not been able to get up there to look at it.
The dealer we bought it from does not service mitsubishi.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Exact same problem with 2003 GTS. Solution currently being attempted via trial & error with our local garage. We have ruled out the brake pedal related shift lock release assembly. The problem seems to be related to the upper of the two cables in the shift console. It's right above the cable that attaches to the brake pedal release and is directly attached to the upper front of the white plastic cam assembly. The cable feeds forward into a metal tube about 3/16" in diameter. he cable is siezed when cold but frees up completely after the car warms for about 20-30 minutes. I'll post final solution when achieved.

2002 eclipse, same exact issue. Worked fine for the first 2 years i've owned it and just started. The car was just recently in an accident and repaired. Any chance that the solenoid could have been damaged during that so it would possibly be covered by insurance?

I have a 2003 GS with 82000 miles. It will not shift out of park either. It will after playing with it for about 20 min jiggling the shifter, pushing in and letting out pushing in a leting out. (could be a cold thing I suppose since it is cold and 20 min. would give it time to warm up) Its almost as if the side push in button is broken. Once I get it out of park it slides through all of the gears without having to push in the side button to get it to move positions. It also will not click into park to allow me to turn the car all the way off and get my key back.

I have a 2003 Eclipse GT with 63000 miles and I have already gotten the transmission rebuilt twice due to this issue. Any valuable info on this problem would be GREAT!!! on a cold night it does not want to go in to gear, and after it does go in to gear; it shifts really funny from 1st to 2nd gear while driving (until it warms up really good.) It will idle down below 500rpm and quit if you leave it at an idle too long while its cold. Please help.

Same problem here with the wife's car (GTS), 14F overnight, would not shift, warmed it up 20 mins and it is fine.

That being said, I am sick of this car. Catalytic converter rusted through (I replaced - $400 instead of $1500), 2 engine mounts broken (I got a local shop to replace ($500, cf dealer $1600), 2 other engine mounts bad (will do soon), warped brake rotors (I replaced), hatch will not stay open (will replace cylinders), passenger door window will not allow door to close unless it is down a couple of mm (TSB - will do). 101K miles.

Compare to my Scion TC at 97K miles - no problems whatsoever. I know what I will be buying in the future.

Update: Discovered that the handbrake was not used at all during parking. Using the handbrake for parking 'solved' the problem - no further trouble even down to 0 deg.F. I drive MT cars so I had not noted my wife not using the handbrake until I saw how far forward the Eclipse rolls on her engaging park.

Most cars you have to push brake pedal to shift out of park etc. the switch at brake pedal is bad or out of adjustment. God-Bless! Its at top of pedal arm.

My 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder's shifter has had problems "freezing" when it is very cold. This has happened a few times now. The button would not depress to allow it to come out of park....

This might seem weird but a lot of people like my daughter who has kids drop things into the floorboard which migrate to underneath the shifter console where those objects interfere with shifting! Just a thought.

2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT dies when I shift from park to reverse. Runs fine in P,D, N. 113,000 miles on the car. Bought it brand new and really haven't had a lot of problems, I have always done regular...

have your torque converter checked sounds like its going to the locked position when you are in reverse. your torque converter should only lock in after you get up to 30-40 MPH then should unlock after you slow down or stop.

I own a 2004 mitsubishi eclipse

There is a cable that goes from the gear shifter to the ignition switch that keeps the key in place until it is placed in park. The cable needs to be lubracated and has to much friction to operate correctly. The consoled has to be removed to correct this problem. Locate the small cable and lubricate it.
