Was told i had a leak in my rear shock and yes it rides a bit rough is that the problem

Shocks/struts are key to keeping your ride in your vehicle as smooth as it can be with the bumps and dips in the road.

Is it plausible this is your problem? Yes.

Is this your problem? I don't know without looking at the vehicle itself.

But, if you notice your vehicle riding rough AND did not state this to the mechanic diagnosing your vehicle and they suggest replacement of the rear shocks, it doesn't seem someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes in this situation.

Replaced rear shocks and when you turn the key on the car jacks all the way up

Check the vehicle height sensor located at the rear trailing axle. It looks like a rod with 2 ball studs on both ends, this vehicle has air ride suspension, an air compressor operates as soon as the key is on, it gets feedback from the level sensor indicating the vehicle height via the height sensor, if it is disconnected, hanging down it thinks the vehicle is sitting low and keeps pumping air into the shocks until it sees a feedback from the sensor, it will eventually stop at its max travel.

yes... on the unit itself. there is an adjustment screw you'll need to turn in one way or the other for sensitivity

97 catera leveling light flashes all the time

The problem is a leaking air shock(s). My 1997 catera had this problem also. I drove the rear wheels up on a set of ramps and went underneath. There is a sensor located close to the rear axle's that moves up when the car is loaded in the rear. (luggage/person in the back seat). When the car senses the extra weight, a small compressor located up under the hood pumps air to the air shocks until the car is back level again. With the key turned on, and the engine off, You can actually move this sensor with your hand and after about 45 seconds, you will hear the small electric compressor come on and see the rear of the car rise. Even if the shock is leaking, the car will still rise but you can hear/feel the air leak on the rubber boot of the shock. The reason the light never stops flashing is because of the air leak the car never really reaches proper leveling. I know what your thinking, "I didn't have extra weight in the car"..doesn't matter car still levels itself from time to time without extra load in the rear. Possible road conditions etc. and also the fact your basically riding around with only one rear shock working like it should. hope this helps......dave

Overtime the rubber boots dry out and create small cracks that leak slowly on the front and rear air suspension. Through experimentation, I have found that you can add this green material called "Green Goop" that you add to bicycle tires to stop leaks. I added four ounces to each shock and exercised them while removed from the car. You'll see this material bleed through these airline cracks. Reinstall shocks but be careful not to allow this green material to leak back to the air solenoid. If the air suspension light on the dashboard is blinking, the compressor has shut down in fault condition. Put the ignition key to off remove the negative side on the battery, turn the key to on and then off. Replaced battery cable and this should clear the fault. If it does not you will half to add air into the system by removing one of the air tubes into the system to build up some pressure and will help to clear the fault. While this may be time-consuming and looks to be complicated, it‘s not! If you have any mechanical ability this can be really achieved and so, will save you couple thousand dollars in replacing the air suspension. One air shock from the dealer is $450. Of course you can convert to standard shocks that are on the market. But this takes away from that great ride that only air suspension can give you! And that makes a XT6 the best! Hope this helps?
