SOURCE: The shifter/transmission on my manual 5 spd 1999 Saturn SL1

This just happen to me a few weeks ago. If you take out the center piece in the car you should be able to see that the actual shifter is no longer connected to the rod which goes into the transmission. It is an easy problem to fix, however it is not cheap. I was told that you have to buy a complete new kit($250.00) for the shifter, however my dad gave me a different solution. He took some wire, and made a spider web type thing to keep it connected. On my car it was a small round plastic piece that broke, but I cannot remember what it was actually called. This little piece is not available through Saturn by itself, only through a complete kit. Please ask questions if this is not clear enough. Thanks :)

SOURCE: cannot shift properly

My Saturn did the same thing - twice. Where the clutch cables connects to the shifter box(??) there is a little clip that had fallen off. The first time this happened, the mechanic told me that I needed to replace the whole shifter box - costing me $400 dollars. The second time - about two years later a different mechanic charged me $15 for the clip and labor.

SOURCE: no the saturn limkage problem can not go into any

there is a ball socket attatchment for the linkage on the side of the transmission. The linkage breaks the clip and falls off the ball attatchment point. Common to saturn stick shifts of the era. You can order the whole linkage assembly with the clip but its expensive(300ish if I remember right), or you can try and get them to sell you JUST the clip (If your ball and socket are intact) if they package it seperately AND your socket and/or ball didnt break. Assuming they are intact, TEMPORARILY you could use multiple tie wraps or steel wire to tie/hold the ball and socket together but it would likely not last long and have the risk of breaking while driving. Wouldnt do damage if it broke while driving, but you will lose the ability to shift when it goes...and will be restricted to coasting down with clutch depressed or driving in whatever gear you were last in till you can reach a service location.

SOURCE: The manual transmission gear shift

take out the console, look on youtube for videos of others doing this. most likely you are going to need a saturn shifter bushing repair kit which you can get on ebay for less than 20 bucks.

Ford focus 2000 gear shifter went loose with bad odor. Still shifts into reverse. Manual. Help

It sounds like there may be an issue with the gear shifter mechanism in your 2000 Ford Focus. The loose shifter and bad odor could indicate that something has broken or worn out inside the mechanism, and it might not be fully disengaging the gears. The fact that it still shifts into reverse suggests that the problem is not with the transmission itself but with the gear shifter assembly.
To fix the issue, the gear shifter mechanism will likely need to be disassembled and inspected for wear or damage. Any broken or worn parts will need to be replaced. It could be caused by the bushings or the gear shift cable that connects the gear shift lever to the transmission. These parts could be dried out, loose or broke. It is also possible that the linkage inside the gear shifter assembly is corroded, or there's internal issue with the shifter mechanism.
Given that it is a manual transmission , it is important that the vehicle is properly repaired as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the transmission or other components. It is best to take it to a professional mechanic to have it inspected and repaired.

I have a 1987 Mazda B2000 pick up. My shifter will not fit back on my newly re-built transmission. Do any other shifters work with this model as I am unable to locate an original for replacement.

I'm sure you have checked the shifter and shifter spring,,...Shifters can be rebuilt also....Make sure your clutch linkage is properly adjusted...The clutch is non adjustable...They may have got air in the hydraulic lines while removing and installing...This would give you a spongy pedal ...Most shifters in order to put it in reverse you push over and up or over and down......if shifter is loose and wobbly it won't have enough force to push the reverse shift rod....However if shifter is in great shape it sounds like the reverse shift rod could be hanging up and not sliding the shift fork...It could be the rebuilders fault......Reverse gear is the largest gear in the transmission and it is located at the back of TRANS which means it will require more force to put in reverse.......I would take it back to rebuilders shop and tell them something isn't right with going to reverse gear...if you wait too long they will think it is something you may have done by incorrect shifting.....

F250 1998 light duty won't shift out of park

For car not changing gears and not shifting out of park mode ,it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

I installed a muncie m20 tranny in my 72 camaro and thought the shft rods were set ..but turns out 1st gear was in the 2nd gear position i tried flipping rod paddles upside down now gears are locked up...

You are right about the shift pattern. Reverse is hard left and up.If your gears are locked up, you'll probably have to remove the side cover and reset the shift levers to their neutral position and then slide gears around to put it back on. With it back on the shift levers should point up toward the car floor. 3-4 is the shift lever closest to the engine. 1-2 is the middle one and reverse is the one closest to the back of the tranny. Check all your swivel points for looseness. If there is any play then you'll have to bush it out or you'll have trouble getting it to shift into gear and stay in. I used some old copper pipe to make bushings on mine, because it used to jump out of gear.
To properly attach your shift linkage, put the shifter and the trans mounted shift levers in neutral. Loosen the locking clamps so the shift rods slide freely. start with the reverse lever, which is the inner most rod on the shifter and tighten the rod nut against the swivel. Then tighten the lock nut. Do the same with the 1-2 rod on the middle rod on the shifter and then the 3-4 which is the outside rod . This should set you up, according to Chilton.
They note that if the tranny is 68 Camero Muncie the shift rods need to be shortened 3 complete turns of the lock nut.
Hope some of this helps.

1995 crown vic gear problems/gear shift wont lock

if the shifter is loose and sloppy feeling then the shift cable bracket has come loose under the dash at the steering wheel. remove the lower panel under the steering wheel so you can see under the dash then get flash light and look while jiggling the shifter. you should be able to see the cable and bracket. if the bracket is loose then tighten the bolts. note this bracket is at the steering colum.
