Question about 1986 Dodge Ramcharger

1 Answer

Location of the Voltage Regulator

I have a 1988 Dodge Ramcharger and have some charging problems.
Does anyone know where the voltage regulator is located? Is it the black box mounted directly on the alternator?

Thanks!

    Thanks! I'll check...

Do you know where I can order the connector for the alternator as well?

I meant the black plastic piece that connects the wiring to the alternator. Maybe the correct word is wiring harness....?

But I think my problem is the alternator itself.

Overcharging

I'm going to assume your meter is accurate and you have verified the 18.4 reading.
Something has to be bypassing the regulator to make the alternator charge at full power. The regulator breaks the circuit dozens of times per minute to maintain 14 volts. Does the alternator charge with the regulator unplugged ?

If it has a voltage regulator it should get power from the key switch to the field wire on the regulator.
You should have battery voltage at the big wire on the alternator with the key off.
I would check for a fuseable link between the alternator and the battery first.

My 1991 dodge ramcharger will not charge. I have had it to the repair shop twice and they keep saying its the alternator. They said they tested the complete charging system and found nothing wrong with...

compare the voltage at the back of the alternator (large post) to the voltage at the battery, when sitting while engine off and running-the readings should be identical. If not, you have a wiring problem or if that is ruled out, the ECM is the issue. You should get readings of 12.5+ volts after sitting overnight, and close to 15 volts when first started, gradually dropping down to about 14.2 volts, at BOTH locations.

You need to replace the external voltage regulator on the fire wall. Probably need a new pig tail wiring harness too.

Charging system is not charging. Battery and alternator good. Any ideas?

check the wires for corrotion at the terminals, especcially the ground wire is prone for problems with corrotion, check on both the alternator and the battery and where they connects to the chassis, also check the wires for other defects

The CPU is located under the hood on the firewall. It is the box looking item just left of center (as you look at it). I was having the same problem and was told to change the CPU. Now I need to findout how to relearn the CPU.
