Question about 1992 Buick Park Avenue

1 Answer

1992 Buick Park Avenue - car runs great..when it runs.

Car starts fine, runs great but constantly has the "engine needs checked" light on continuously. But when the little light goes out...the car dies. This goes on about 4-10 times down the road and then the rest of the day it seems fine again. Didn't know if it needed a fuel filter/ pump? or maybe the Crank sensor I keep hearing about?
Where is the crank sensor? Is it difficult to change?
Would appreciate any and all answers you can help with!
Merry Christmas! Patty.

I sure appreciate your help! I need to mention though, that the car now seems to run fine while it is cold...once it warms up, this is when all the problems of dying are now happening. Do you still believe I should consider the Crank sensor and / or the map sensor after this? I'm currently trying to find a picture of the crank shaft sensor on the dampner / pulley bracket to help me recognize the actual item. Being a disabled mom and "use to be" back yard mechanic, lol. These newer vehicles are a huge puzzle to me.
    Thank you again for everything!

The crank sensor is located on the side of crankshaft damper/pulley it mounted on a bracket. However it think that you may have a map-sensor problem that's very common with this vehicle. The crank sensor is not hard to change at all. Good Luck get back in contact if you need more help

Security light in.car runs fine, but light won't go out. what do i need to do to get light to turn off

The security system (VATS/PassKey) is having problems, it's typical on those cars. It starts with just the security light on, and then it gets worse and randomly the car won't start and to the point that it won't start anymore. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , it was the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.

With your transmission warm and your car running. Check your fluid level. With that amount of Km, it most likely needs serviced and the bands tighten. There are some additives on the market that will give you a little longer life. You may want to try some of them.
