how long has this been going on?

  • Thomas Dec 20, 2008

does it do it when it is warm outside? if not then i would say that you have a problem in the instrument cluster. at this point in time as long as it don't get worse then I wouldn't worry about it. That particular part can be very expensive to replace.

sounds like you have a grounding issue possibly a main grounding location. inconsistant grounding of the vehicles control module will cause erratic behaviours. check under the hood for ground locations containing multiple grounds at 1 bolt location.if different "experts" have attempted repair and failed chances are they are all looking in the wrong place.dash{interior of vehicle}..actual cause.{egine compartment or under side of locations.}good luck and safe motoring:>

I have a 1997 buick le sabre with only 70k original miles... the speedometer works intermitently... now less and less... do I need to replace the whole instrument cluster? or is it a loose wire?? any...

you might want to check the speedo drive gears at the transmission and make sure they are in good shape and the gear that drives the electrical portion is spinning freely as any damage here will cause intermittent speedo operation.also if this is an electrically sent speedo from the tranny check the electrical connections.there is also a speedo buffer in the dash that rarely goes bad but is still a possibility.and lastly it could be the speedometer head thats the problem.when the speedo stops working does the odometer still work.if so then the problem is in the speedo head.i don`t remember which ones or what year they changed them but some you could just replace the speedo head and not the whole cluster assembly.

When driving my land cruiser there is a whining noise ,Ive been told that it is the speedo cable, the sound is coming below and back a bit from gear stick, sounds like it could be coming from area wear...

This sounds more like a u joint or internal transmission bearing to me. Normally if the speedo cable goes bad the speedo will not work. It could also be the gear that drives the cable too. I would have a trusted transmission expert look at it.

Speedo on my punto active registers but is well below zero before i pull away should needle be on zero at all times when not driving

no its ok depends on year if its a newer vehicle then its a dealer only job to re calibrate it ,you must be in europe as no american would drive such a small car ,and as your in europe this vehicle is all encrypted software so their is no chance to do anything yourself ,sometimes though the zero stop falls out but if its a newer vehicle with all electrric speedo then its a reset in dealer and i bet they want to fit a new dash unit and the bill will be around 500 euros thats for sure

Speedometer froze at 65mph. now it goes from 65 to above 120

The speedo head is electronically controlled and is fed it's information from the vehicle speed sensor, or VSS sensor, depending on engine and transmission the VSS directs information to the speedo head threw the computer so it has to be tested to see if it is OK. If there is no check engine light then it may mean it's the speedo head itself that is defective. You can try and remove it out of the dash and replace the speedo head but normally this has to be done by a certified mechanic He has to write on the work order the mileage on the truck and when installing the new speedo he has to put a stamp on your door with his company name and when he did the replacement head. There are no mechanical connections like o the older cars, it is fed threw the transmission computer vehicle sensor or how ever the power train management system it is not a mechanical problem except for the speedo head it self. The needle windings may have stuck or a piece of plastic could have broke off and wedged itself inside the head itself. If you want instructions on how to remove your speedo head I can give you the instructions to do so, The speedo head will come out and you can buy them at a junk yard and maybe the dealer if they still have them available, otherwise they sell it as a full instrument cluster set. There are after market parts you can by at Schucks, Nappa or Auto zone, they run about $150.00 dollers and normally have a white face with black letters. Hope this helps and if you need more help don't be bashful about asking.

2001 ford Expedition odometer reads 100mph

I used to calibrate police speedometers, The odometer by the way is the device that records how much distace you have travelled, The little numbers on the bottom of your speedo. If your speedo reads 100mph regardless of how fast you are travelling, The answer is simple you have some dirt jammed in your speedo. Check that your speedo is mechanical ie it has an armoured square ended cable that comes from the engine to the back of your speedo. Get your hand round the back of the dash and find the back of the speedo. See if you can feel an armoured cable going into the speedo, if so it will usually unscrew and let you pull the square drive inner out. This task is easier if you can first get the speedo out. It will have to come out. Then take the speedo apart without removing the pointer. A cup spins round a magnet and the pivots on the magnet sometimes get glued up. Clean with fine paint brush and parrafin. DO NOT TOUCH THE HAIRSPRING. Get diagram of dragcup speedo as it will show you all the parts. Hope this helps
